<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A CAR importer was charged in a district court on Wednesday with 318 charges of fraudulent evasion of excise duty and Goods and Services Tax. Ng Thiam Thi, 43, is said to have make under-declarations on 327 Japanese cars which resulted in short-payment of duty and GST totalling $455,506. He allegedly submitted customs declarations that showed incorrect values for the import of the cars from Japan between March 2007 and September last year. Ng's lawyer, Mr S Thulasidas, said he would be making representations. A pre-trial conference has been fixed on Dec 11. Bail of $200,000 was set. If convicted, Ng can be fined up to 20 times the amount of duty and GST evaded or imprisonment or both. In addition to the penalties meted out by the court, offenders are also required to make good the duty and GST short-paid to the government.
