Cameras to be installed in crime hotspots

Ho Chi Minh City authorities have asked three large districts and the city police to prepare plans to install cameras in areas where crime and other social issues often occur.
Accordingly, the governments of Districts of 1, 3 and 5 will coordinate with the city police department to work together on plans to install camera systems in a number of areas in these districts.
Areas to be selected for camera installation are those where robberies, snatching, thefts, fierce competition by drivers of transport firms for passengers, the gathering of beggars who disturb tourists, and disturbance caused be peddlers of items to tourists, especially foreigners, and other bad practices, often occur.
The People’s Committee also asked the Departments of Finance and Industry and Trade to strengthen control over trader of goods and service providers to ensure that the prices of goods and services are publicized for their customers.
These departments must strictly punish those who violate regulations on management over prices and fees, hurting tourists to the city.
The authorities also asked the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to coordinate with district governments to build qualified public toilets for visitors.
Earlier this month, the city police reported that crime situation has worsened recently, with many cases in which robbers have broken into house to steal motorbikes; staged vehicle collisions in an attempt to rob or steal; or attacked and robbed residents right in front of their houses.
As one of the largest economic hubs in the country, HCMC hosts an increasing number of immigrants, a number of whom are undesirables who may commit crime, said Colonel Le Anh Tuan, chief of the HCMC Police Secretariat.
Tuan said that the city police are placing their forces on cracking down on crime in a number of hot spots around the city.
