Camera pen to record upskirt videos

By Elena Chong

A SALES manager who recorded about 200 upskirt videos of unsuspecting women over a four-month period has pleaded guilty.

Soo Ee Hock, 35, admitted to 12 of 201 charges of using a camera pen with a built-in video camera, to capture upskirt digital video recordings of women at various locations including Ang Mo Kio Hub, Compass Point and Junction 8 shopping centres. The offences occurred from Nov 11, 2008 to March 25, 2009.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Bagchi Anamika said Soo's offences were uncovered when a woman alerted a cleaning staff at Junction 8 in Bishan on July 7, 2009, that a 'male Chinese pervert' was trying to record images of women's undergarments.

Two security officers tailed Soo and stopped him at Basement One. He was later arrested by the police. Further investigation showed that Soo would clip a camera pen to the side of his laptop bag, switch it on and place the bag under the skirt of the woman standing in front of him on the escalator .

While DPP Bagchi had urged the court to take a serious view and impose a jail sentence on Soo, on each charge, lawyer Jeffrey Beh wanted fines for his client. Soo will be sentenced on Dec 14. He can be jailed for up to one year and/or fined on each charge of intruding into the privacy of the woman.

SINGAPORE: A sales manager pleaded guilty on Tuesday to 12 charges of taking upskirt videos. Soo Ee Hock, 36, originally faced 201 such charges, but 189 were taken into consideration.

By using a black camera pen, the plump, bespectacled man managed to capture the images at different locations, such as the Compass Point and Junction 8 shopping centres and Ang Mo Kio Hub.

The married man, who committed the offences between November 2008 and March last year, would clip the camera pen to the side of his laptop bag and place the bag under the skirts of women standing in front of him as they went up escalators.

He would transfer the videos onto his company-issued laptop before copying selected clips onto a CD.

He was caught in July last year after an unidentified woman complained about his actions to a staff member at Junction 8.

In mitigation, Soo's lawyer Jeffrey Beh told the court his client had committed the offences when he was going through a stressful time at work and at home.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Anamika Bagchi said that Soo had repeatedly taken videos of unsuspecting victims.

She added that the acts were pre-planned and not committed at the spur of the moment.

Soo will be sentenced on December 14.

He could be jailed up to a year and fined for each charge.

FOR about five months, Soo Ee Hock had surreptitiously filmed under the skirts of unknown women with a black camera pen clipped to his laptop bag while travelling on escalators. By the time the 36-year-old sales manager was caught in July last year, he had captured 201 images of women's undergarments at various locations including Ang Mo Kio Hub, Compass Point and Junction 8 shopping centres.

Yesterday, Soo, who is married, pleaded guilty to 12 charges of intruding into the privacy of women by video-recording 'upskirt' images. His offences came to light after an unknown woman at Junction 8 in Bishan alerted a cleaner that a 'pervert' was trying to record upskirt images.

Two security officers tailed and detained him as he was walking towards the carpark at Basement 1.
He was arrested by the police. A black pen, which has a USB port and a pin-hole camera that can capture videos and sounds, and a Sony CD-R were found on him.

From Nov 11, 2008 to March 25 last year, Soo had used the pen to take upskirt videos of unknown female subjects at various locations. His modus operandi was to clip the pen to the side of his laptop bag, go up an escalator, switch on the pen and place his bag under the skirt of the unsuspecting female in front of him.

A SALES manager who took about 200 upskirt videos of unsuspecting women with a camera pen was sentenced to nine months' jail on Tuesday.

Soo Ee Hock, 35, intends to appeal and bail of $20,000 was offered. The married man had pleaded guilty two weeks ago, to 12 of 201 counts of intruding into the privacy of women between November 2008 and March last year.

He would clip the pen with a built-in video camera onto his laptop bag and place it under the skirt of the unknown female standing in front of him on an escalator, to capture an upskirt digital video recording of her thighs and underwear. He was arrested at Junction 8 Bishan Shopping Centre on July 7, 2009.

District Judge Lee Poh Choo said Soo knew full well what he was doing and was a serial offender. She said he intended to keep those images for a long time as he had burnt them onto a CD, and 'that shows the extent of his perverted mind'. Soo could have been jailed for up to one year and/or fined on each charge.
