Calling for referendum on GRC – the last cure for Singapore
Tomorrow I celebrate my 40th birthday. My only wish for this year – a referendum to be held concerning GRC!
A check on wikipedia showed that we have only held a referendum once and that was back in 1962. Back then we were called to vote on the terms of merger with Malaysia. After being disillusioned with the PAP’s leadership in the last ten years, is this a good time to hold a referendum? If yes, what will be the options offered?
Referendum Options
Option A : GRC should remain and no referendum will ever be raised on
this topic so forth.
Option B : GRC should be scraped here on and will forever be illegal
to bring up in Parliament.
Of course, if it was absolutely up to me, I will offer Option C : GRC is hereby outlawed and all involved in the conception of GRC will be arrested and charged with treason with a minimum jail term of at least 5 years.
Never in the history of democracy has less than 100 men decided the fate of more than 4.5 million citizens! 40 percent of us voted “NO” to PAP, yet they occupy more than 90 percent of Parliament! Is this true democracy? We are a democratic society only in name!
Every five years, our politicians come out to put on a good show. Bringing the state media along, it includes walkabout and of course now the notorious crying of our dear PM. His excuse – it’s human to err and they should be forgiven and given a chance to atone their mistakes. We the citizens are not God. I for one do not have the capacity to forgive!
The sky-rocketed housing prices, the influx of foreigners into our land, all these are not mistakes of mere mortals like myself. They are the result of these MPs who like to play God or maybe even think that they are GOD! Does God come down from their high horses every five years just to ask for another chance?!
We are sick and tired of all these tomfoolery. You used race as an excuse to allow GRC to exist legitimately! Brilliant political move!
Had you shown more care and concern for us, we would have turned a blind eye on this system. Nonetheless, this political set-up has allowed you to bring in whom you like and not who is the best. Next thing you know, you force us to accept people like TPL and FMH! If my Malay and Indian friends are complaining that GRC is an absolute “bullshit”, what grounds can you offer for the continued existence of the supposed impregnable fortress?
A lot of politicians in the first world countries have to sell their ideas or campaigns to their voters. You, the PAP, bypass that step with the help of GRC. That’s why you don’t need to understand the ground or don’t need to even try to pretend that you do. Your fundamental assumption is “ALL CITIZENS ARE STUPID”. And based on this assumption, you think that it is only right that we be RULED by you. How then are you different from our previous British colonial masters?!
Once, I was also an ardent supporter of the PAP. Their propaganda was so successful that I never bothered to ask any question about their rule. Well, I have grown up since and I can tell you, the PAP tree now is infested with termites!
When did the decline start? It can be traced back to the very day when the GRC concept was born! With GRC, the party became complacent. They were no longer interested to look for the best candidates in the land, but instead looked inwards for people who are “YES-men” or “YES-women” to join the party. The GRC gave you unlimited political power and consolidated your power base but it also effectively ended the relationship you have with the voters!
You are already going to hold a by-election for Hougang, why not throw in a national referendum too, so that all of us can vote on that day? Now, my question to our dear PM is, do you have the guts to call for one?
