A TAXI driver, who was also moonlighting as a drug trafficker, was so high he did not notice the motorcycle directly in front of him waiting for the lights to change. Lee Cheun Khuen's taxi ploughed into the bike in July 2008, killing the rider and seriously injuring the pillion rider. The 43-year-old was jailed for a year by a district court on Tuesday for failing to keep a proper lookout and causing the death of Mr Zainudin Abu Bakar. He also admitted last week to grievously injuring the pillion rider, Mr Jamaludin Abdul Ghani, and to being under the influence of drugs to such an extent that he was incapable of controlling his vehicle.

Lee had tested positive for consuming methamphetamine in a urine test after the accident. Drugs were also found in his taxi and he was sentenced to eight years in jail and five strokes of the cane for trafficking, possession and consumption of drugs in February last year. He was also disqualified from driving all vehicles for 10 years. Lee could have been jailed for up to five years and/or fined up to $10,000 for committing a rash act that resulted in a death.
