AN INDONESIAN businessman was yesterday jailed 18 months for stabbing his wife in their daughter’s Eunos flat on June 5.

Over what was apparently a quarrel which started because of a slammed door, Soewarsono Aris, 61, stabbed Madam Kie Gek Bwee, 56, eight times in the abdomen, thighs and chest.

A district court heard yesterday that the couple were in their grandchildren’s bedroom some time after midnight when their granddaughter, aged eight, awoke and cried. She was comforted back to sleep by her father, who entered the room.

Soewarsono then left the bedroom, banging the door shut and angering his wife, who scolded him for making the noise. He then accused her of not showing him respect by criticising him in front of their son-in-law. He slapped her and went to the living room to sleep.

The next day, she would neither talk to him about the incident nor return to Indonesia with him when he asked her to.

When her back was turned, Soewarsono stabbed her with a knife in the abdomen, and then himself, also in the abdomen. He continued stabbing her even as his daughter and son-in-law tried to stop him.

He was arrested, and Madam Kie spent eight days in hospital.

The couple’s four children said in a joint mitigation letter that their father, who runs a car repair business in Medan, had been under prolonged stress and was remorseful.

He could have been jailed up to seven years and fined.
