Brother jailed for attack on Harry Potter actress
Reuters
Reuters - Saturday, January 22

LONDON - The brother of Harry Potter actress Afshan Azad was jailed on Friday for six months for attacking his sister after discovering she was dating a non-Muslim.

Azad, 22, who played Padma Patil in the hit film franchise, feared for her life during the three-hour ordeal last year, Manchester Crown Court heard.

According to the Press Association, she was punched, dragged around by her hair and strangled by her brother Ashraf Azad, 28, who threatened to kill her after he found her talking on the phone to her Hindu boyfriend.

The assault occurred during a dispute at the family home in Longsight, Manchester, which also involved her mother and father. During the row she was branded a "slag" and a "prostitute" and told: "Marry a Muslim or you die!"

The actress, who now lives in London, had asked the court not to jail her older brother.

But judge Roger Thomas sent him to prison for six months after he pleaded guilty to the assault.

"This persistent attack was accompanied by serious and very hurtful abuse and threats," the judge told the defendant.

"The background to this offence lies in the concern that you, and perhaps other family members, had about Afshan's relationship with a young man who was not of the Islamic faith."

Azad appears in several of the Potter movies, including the Yule Ball scene in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" where she played Ron Weasley's somewhat reluctant date.

Typical Muslim troublemakers

Its not just Muslim, Hindus will do the same as long as they hold own to their primitive tradition.

This is as close to honor killing as it should be. These people are willing to kill not because of their religion but their pride. They ignore the fact that what they tends to commit is worst than what the victim intended to do. This is a result of prolong immersion in a male dominance society where male chauvinistism is seen as a virtue.

They are at the end pethatic coward. The six months jail is not a punishment but a leniency because of his sister.

Gosh, if those two religions + extremist Christianity was wiped out, the world will be a better place. :D

I don't think it's a religious thing... If her brother really mind the non-Muslim issue he should have also ban her from acting in Harry Potter! It's haram!

"Religious" people are well-known for being selective. If it reaps benefits and $$$ for them, no matter how irreligious the action is, they will keep quiet.

Remember the scandal of priests molesting young boys in churches? These are the same people who condemned people who don't believe in God as heretic and hell-bound. But it is okay for them to do cruel thing because God has reserved a seat for them in heaven. All they have to do is to seek forgiveness from God.

Applies to Muslims and Hindus too.

The brother should remind himself one of the most common greetings "In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful".
