A British woman has died under anaesthesia during a cosmetic procedure by an uncertified surgeon at a clinic in Thailand's capital, authorities said yesterday.
The 24-year-old patient stopped breathing after receiving an anaesthetic during the operation on Thursday night, said Boonruang Triruangworawat, director-general of the Health Service Support Department.
She was undergoing a corrective procedure at the clinic in the northern Lat Phrao district of the capital where she previously underwent liposuction, police lieutenant Chaleang Inthip said.
"She visited the clinic for liposuction on October 14 and came back yesterday after contracting an infection ... She died at the clinic at around 9.30pm," he said.
Sompob Sansiri, the doctor who performed the operations, was not certified for cosmetic surgery, Boonruang said.
"There was an attempt to resuscitate her but ultimately she did not survive," he said. "We are looking into why it happened."
Police charged Sompob with causing death by reckless endangerment. He is likely to also face charges relating to illegal medical surgery from the Health Service Support Department.
Thailand is known for affordable cosmetic procedures, but there have been several deaths from botched surgeries.
