There is growing unrest in Thailand this week as its ruler, King Rama X, continues to holiday at a Bavarian Alpine retreat as his country buckles under the strain of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Thai monarch and his entourage are believed to have taken over a four-star spa and hotel in the region, and he has not been seen in public in Thailand since February.

Tens of thousands of Thai citizens broke the strict lèse-majesté laws, which ban them from criticising the King and can result in a 15 year prison sentence, in order to call out his actions online. A Thai phrase that means, 'Why do we need a King?' has been shared 1.2 million times on Twitter.

The King and his courtiers are said to be living at the 19th century mansion hotel, Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl, which has been both a Nazi military and a girls' boarding school in the past. The Thai ruler is believed to own a house nearby, on Lake Starnberg, so it could be that he is holed up there.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand has rented out every single room of a hotel in Germany so he can self-isolate with his harem of 20 women and his servants.

Amongst the closures of all hotels due to the crisis, the Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl applied for, and received a special permit to house the king and his company.

Located at the foot of the Alps, the Grand Hotel boasts a panoramic view of the snow-covered mountain range, with access to ski activities and "exquisite rooms, suites and apartments," according to its website.

With lakeside strolls, canoes available and spa facilities, the king's retreat seems seldom like the self-isolation measures we've seen people take, and more like a five-star luxury, adult ski trip.

The 67-year-old Thai King, a regular in Germany already, often residing in his $12 million mansion at Lake Starnberg, has been spotted enjoying the facilities of the luxury hotel, riding his bike outside with several of the women in his harem.

Confirming no other guests were allowed to stay at the hotel, a spokesperson for the district office confirmed the granting of the permit, "The Garmisch-Partenkirchen district office granted the Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl an exception because the guests are a single, homogeneous group of people with no fluctuation."

The king reportedly sent 119 servants back to Bangkok because they were suspected to be carrying the COVID-19 virus.

Among the luxurious self-isolation state the Vajiralongkorn currently resides in, criticisms from his Kingdom of Thailand have flared, with the hashtag #WhyDoWeNeedAKing trending across Twitter.

While insulting the monarchy in Thailand is a crime punishable with up to 15 years in prison, the hashtag was used more than 1.2 million times in 24 hours.

The Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Puttipong Punnakanta responded to disgruntled tweets, issuing a warning to citizens against breaking laws on online content.

"We respect self-expression but if it causes damage, we will exercise the law," the tweet read.

It was the first country outside China to record a case of the virus in January.
