Police detonate box outside shopping mall KUALA LUMPUR:
A police bomb squad detonated a suspicious-looking box believed to contain an explosive substance outside a well-known shopping complex here. A security guard found the box at 11.30am and alerted the police.
A bomb squad arrived minutes later and an officer found a plastic package containing white powder with wires inside the box. Not wanting to take any chances, they cordoned off the area before detonating the package at 1pm.
City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ku Chin Wah said the bomb squad used a robot detonator to destroy the package. He said there was no explosion upon detonation. “We believe it was not a real bomb,” he said when contacted.
The materials from the box have been sent to the police chemistry department for further tests.
