案发地永福购物广场是白云区嘉禾地区较旺的大型商场之一，平时人流量很大。在商场大门左侧便是商场提供的免费自行车停放点。虽然商场有告示说明，停放点只免费停车，商场不承担相关责任，但身为商场保安的丁江华，在值勤时仍会不时到停放点巡逻。
26日晚7时许，丁江华一人在商场门口值勤，突然发现自行车停放点，有一名20多岁男子，正在用工具对一辆自行车撬锁，该男子身旁还有两名同龄男子，鬼鬼祟祟，不时四处张望，似乎是在帮忙看风。
“他(丁江华)胆子很大，没有用对讲机呼叫支援，一个人什么都没拿就冲了上去。”旁边开奶茶档的小陈说，当时见到丁江华冲过来，两名望风男子当即夺路而逃，而当丁江华就要逼近撬锁盗车男子时，该男子突然掏出一柄利刀刺向丁江华。
丁江华顺势一躲，但手背仍被划出一道血口，男子行凶后便慌忙逃跑。“可能路面上还有别的保安，小偷跑了一圈又转回来了。”小陈说。
当盗车男子慌不择路，重新跑回到自行车停放点附近时，身子半边衣服已经被鲜血染红的丁江华奋力将其扑倒在地，并大喊“抓小偷！抓小偷！”。丁江 华与盗贼扭打在一起，整个搏斗过程持续了约三分钟。附近几家商铺的年轻小伙子听到呼救声后，都冲出去帮忙，大家合力将盗车男子制服。
丁江华才腾出身来坐在商场前的石墩上喘着大气，不自不觉中，丁江华发现自己身下的地面渐渐被滴落的鲜血染红了。
“追贼的时候，他(丁江华)可能注意力太集中了，都没注意到自己受伤了。”目击者林先生说，当时丁江华的上衣都被染红，手背和胸前多处被利刀划伤。仔细一看，林先生吓了一大跳：半截明晃晃的刀片，竟然硬生生的插在丁江华的咽喉处。
多名目击者表示，丁江华追捕盗车男子时，曾多次遭到男子挥刀反抗，可能是在打斗中丁江华不幸被利刀刺中咽喉，但由于刀片过软，用力过猛折断才留在丁江华的咽喉部位。“丁江华真算得上英雄，刀插在喉咙里还把贼抓住了。”
事后，受伤的丁江华先被同事送往附近医院急救，而后因伤势过重又被转院送入南方医院抢救。
27日中午，记者在南方医院急诊部，看到了静躺在病房里的丁江华，他鼻插氧气管，仍在进行输液，双手及咽喉包扎着厚厚的纱布，还处于昏迷状态。
据主治医生介绍，丁江华全身共有三处刀伤，双手背被划破，咽喉部约3厘米长的刀片所幸未触及动脉。直到27日清晨6时许，丁江华的抢救手术才完成，目前已基本脱离生命危险。
据同事介绍，丁江华今年26岁，来自广东湛江。到永福商场已经工作八个月左右。据保安何先生介绍，他平日里工作十分认真，责任感很强。丁江华参加工作才八个月，就获得了三次优秀岗位员工的称号。
27日12时左右，白云区区委书记骆蔚峰一行四人来到丁江华的病房探望。骆书记称：一定要全力以赴将其治愈。并留下了慰问金。
白云区政府表示，被抓获的嫌疑人已被白云警方依法刑拘，案件正在进一步侦办中。公安部门已成立专案组，将加大侦查力度，早日将另外两名犯罪嫌疑人缉拿归案。嘉禾街还将为丁江华申请见义勇为基金。(许琛、钟传芳、云宣)
