Indonesian Girl May Have Lost Kidney to Traffickers, NGO Says
13 Jan 2010
A12-year-old Indonesian girl was found recently in Japan with her tongue cut out and possibly one of her kidneys removed, a children’s rights group said on Wednesday.
Arist Merdeka Sirait, secretary general of the National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas Anak), said the girl, whose name and the whereabouts of her relatives were being withheld, may have been the victim of human-organ trafficking ring.
Based on reports that have been relayed to the commission, Arist said the girl, who was found wandering the streets, could not speak because her tongue had been cut out. He said the girl also reportedly had a bruise near her hip, which suggested that one of her kidneys had been removed.
“Our sources received the information earlier this week. We do not know in which city the girl was found exactly, but she is now safe and is staying with an Indonesian family in Japan, Arist said.
“There is a real possibility that her kidney has been sold,” he added.
The girl, who has apparently been writing down details about herself, said she was taken from her home in 2006, although it was not clear if she was referring to a residence in Indonesia or Japan.
Arist said that Seto Mulyadi, the chairman of Komnas Anak, had flown to Japan to look into the case personally.
