The general manager of a Beijing hotel has made a public apology after staff were discovered to have been using guest towels to clean toilets and drinking glasses, reports the state-run news agency Xinhua.
According to the local Beijing News, cleaning staff at the Fortuneland Hotel in Chaoyang district used towels intended for guests to clean bathroom toilets, windows and floors, and later used the same towels to clean the room's drinking glasses. They hung the towels back up in the bathroom for the next guest's use after washing them.
An employee said this is a hidden rule among the staff because they don't have enough towels to clean with and that it is impossible to wash enough linen to keep up with demand.
"We have some holes in our inspection," said the manager, surnamed Zhou, who said the hotel and the group that owns it, Shaanxi Meihuan Hotel Group, have begun to investigate after the report. Zhou claimed the incident is a result of the actions of individuals and does not apply to all cleaning staff. Those responsible have been dismissed, Zhou said.
The group said they have strictly implemented inspections and require standards and procedures for cleaning and sterilizing cleaning tools. They said they would rather close the Beijing hotel if it cannot meet the standards.
