Lalmonirhat lynching: Investigators find no evidence of Quran desecration,” by Liakat Ali Badal, Dhaka Tribune, October 31, 2020:

An intelligence report filed over the killing of Abu Yunus Md Shahidunnabi Jewel, who was barbarically lynched and immolated at Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat, has found no evidence of desecration of the Quran by the victim.

The report, filed by a state intelligence agency, also named Burimari Central Jame Mosque khadim (attendant) Zubed Ali, a decorator businessman Abul Hossain alias Hossain Ali, and an upazila parisad member Hafizul Islam as prime accused in the brutal murder.

It also said that Jewel was lynched after being falsely accused for desecrating the Quran by the mosque’s khadim, right after the victim offered his prayers at the mosque on Thursday last.

Meanwhile, three separate cases have been filed over the incident. Of them, one was filed by the Upazila Chairman SM Nawaz Nishat naming 22 individuals and 500-600 unnamed people. The case also named Hafizul Islam as the prime accused in the brutal murder.

Jewel, 50, was beaten to death by an angry mob on the Burimari Union Parishad premises and the mob then took his body to Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway and set it on fire.

The intelligence report also noted that the upazila chairman, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), and the officer-in-charge of the respective police station should also be held accountable for failing to prevent the barbaric incident….

What a waste. He could have made a good living digging roads or pruning trees in Sinkieland.
