Unsafe levels of ultrafine dust blanketed 27 of the 50 districts of Bangkok on Sunday, with Pathum Wan the worst affected, the Bangkok Air Quality Information Centre said.

City hall reported levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometres and less in diameter (PM2.5) measured across the capital between 5am and 7am were from 25.5 to 50.3 microgrammes per cubic metre (µg/m³). The official set safe threshold is 37.5 µg/m³.

Dust levels in all areas were expected to rise further. There were currently 27 districts posting orange-level readings, which start to affect health.

The 10 most polluted districts were - Pathum Wan (50.3), Chatuchak (48.2), Prawet (45.8), Bang Rak (44.7), Sathorn (44), Lat Karbang (43), Thawi Watthana (43), Ratchathewi (42.9), Nong Khaem (42.9) and Lak Si (42.2).

In the coming week into Jan 16, air flow in Bangkok is expected to further weaken, trapping more dust in the city. The air quality centre expected haze levels to ease around Jan 17-18.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration advised government and private sector employees to work from home if possible on Monday and Tuesday, which would also reduce congestion and the level of dust caused by vehicle emissions.

Other provinces reporting unsafe levels of air in some areas were - Loei, Phetchaburi, Ang Thong, Uthai Thani, Nong Khai, Sing Buri, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Samut Prakan, Ratchaburi, Phitsanulok, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Chai Nat, Khon Kaen and Kalasin, according to real-time monitoring platform Air4Thai of the Pollution Control Department.
