1. The Bak Chang festival amongst Chinese born, in or out of China, has origins based upon the HEROIC & self sacrificial attempts by a greatly revered Statesman - Qu Yuan, whom lived in Chu State during the upheavals & Warring States in China, of the horrific infighting among the Chinese People in China, whom had DONE all he could to STEM corruption in his State, but failed, & thus took his life as a protest against such heinous trafficking.

2. As he was revered, many in his State took to boats, with rice dumplings to feed the fishes so that such will not feed on the body of the revered Statesman, to leave his body pristine....such are beliefs, but it TRANSCENDS the belief by many whom had SUFFERED under corrupted practices even today, to HONOR such a TRADITIONAL & CULTURAL practice, that such beliefs may help END corruption, or AT THE LEAST, make known to Leaders that corruption & its evil means - such as Human trafficking, drugs, money launderings, & many other harmful acts, WILL NOT be CONTENACED by 7 billion plus Humankind....

3. However, it seemed strange that in honor of this festival, many if not ALL of such producers of Bak Chang CHOOSED to RAISE prices ASTRONOMICALLY in this time of MOURNING for a courageous ancestor.

4. When a Bak Chang is sold at say $2.50, suddenly during this Festival it rises to $5 & even far more such as $48 per piece, are such NOT PROFITEERING & DISHONOR to our ancient ancestor & his aims?

5. The insignificant nobody me had the privilege to meet up with a stall owner, to buy my usual fare out of a sudden & pragmatic liking of Bak Chang as it is a fast to cook tasty meal, as I work under irregular hours & most restaurants & hawker stalls would be closed in the early hours by the time I can get a hot meal.

6. I was surprised by the HIKE in prices over a simple meal. He told me that such prices were raised by his supply chains - the manufacturers. Even worse, usually there would be little of such packaged meals left when I managed to buy it earlier on, but during this time, there were overflowing amounts of such meals at his stall, which means in economic terms - STAGFLATION - more goods than consumers would buy....

7. I told him as much, but he just shook his head in despair, as those unsold Bak Changs were PAID by his hard earned savings at its current HIKED prices. Such are foods that have to be quickly sold or otherwise it will rot. He did not realized that he had been made used of by moronic but greedy suppliers.... Perhaps he should had diversify his choice of items to be sold or look for better resources during such times, so as NOT be be dangled on a string by illegal cartels...

8. Sigh..... but the REALITY is that INFLATION is NOT a SITUATION, but a CHOICE. May sellers & buyers be aware of such that in the FREE Market policies that Singapore & its citizens adopts.....

Bak Chang is easily available 365 days in SG, there is no novelty at all ... just another item to eat on that Day ?
Unlike Moon Cakes, you only get them during festive season, it's not a everyday you can get item
You see Takashimaya have no large event on Bak-Chang, meaning its not sellable product

Thanks to all the contributors for this thread, which is rather unexpected to me....

1. The Qu Yuan festival, or known by many other names such as Dragon Boat Festival, Bak Chang festival, etc, is meant to commemorate & honor an ancient fellow Human born with a silver spoon, whom stood up against corruption, & gave up his life - the last means to both high & low level of ancestors to warn Humanity of the evils of corruption & all that it brings to society.

2. No doubt that this festival, which is not even declared an official holiday in Singapore, but within the hearts & minds of the Chinese ethnic groups, it is a tradition to honor the memory of Qu Yuan AND his efforts, as well as those ancient ancestors whom had been TOUCHED & realized realties, to HONOR his memory & efforts for thousands of years, even now, as a reminder for the next innocent generations to come...

3. Bak Chang is actually a fast meal, comparable to instant noodles & even hamburgers. It only takes 6 minutes to boil it and one gets a tasty meal, filled with carbo & proteins, with enough mineral compounds, even little at low costs to producers & manufacturers, to keep one on the go, unlike junk food.

4. Thus, there is EVERY reason to rage against manufacturers whom made used of this festival to raise prices. No doubt that under free market conditions, one should seek opportunities, of the principles of demand & supply, but ultimately, Human conscience WILL still have to rule.

Festivals are meant to HONOR Humans whom had elevated our lives, & NOT to fill the pockets of the greedy unconscionable, whom only through their greed, had DISHONORED the works of great mortals whom had taught us guides to progress & evolution.

While the manufacturers may claimed that they would need extra hands, food & energy resources, etc, to justify the rise in prices during this period, the fact remains that it is mostly the middlemen whom bear the brunt with unsold stocks that came out from their own savings to purchase from the manufacturers, in the hope that naive consumers will still foolishly buy,

Singaporeans are not fools. What that had been created by the manufacturer can easily be created in one's home at far more little costs, rather than be held hostage to price increases, which only benefits the bosses & NOT even the workers whom are still paid the same for the same amount of work put in.

Thus it only proves poor biz acumen in all aspects of biz enterprise, of manufacturers for their lack in organization & planning even in this age of AI.

5. This thread by the insignificant nobody me is not just about a mere few dollars to pay for a product, which is pocket change to me, but there may be many, MANY others within our Singapore Civilization that have little deep pockets...... It is meant to open up minds to the bigger picture of morality & economics, within my poor pathetic means......

It's only 'easily available' if you give your business to the factory-made, mass-produced ones.

Also, for the Chinese Taoist pagans, the dumplings are also religious offerings.
