An Australian man was stabbed to death by a taxi driver in Moscow on Sunday, the Moskva news agency reported.

The 33-year-old victim died after a fight broke out between the two inside the taxi.

A local police patrol's attention was drawn to the Hyundai Sonata at 10:25 a.m. on Profsoyuznaya Ulitsa in southwest Moscow, after it became clear that something suspicious had been happening inside the cab.

When the officers approached the vehicle to request identification, the taxi driver sped away in an attempt to escape, his victim still in the car.

The ensuing chase lasted five minutes, before the car was eventually overtaken and the driver apprehended by police.

The passenger was found covered in blood with multiple stab wounds to the chest and hips.

Though he was immediately rushed off for emergency medical assistance, he did not survive the ambulance ride. He died within 15 minutes from excessive loss of blood.

In accordance with Article 105 of Russia's Criminal Code, police have filed the case as a murder and are currently attempting to ascertain the cause of the fight between the driver and his passenger.
