Arrests of junkies lead to cache of firearms

JOHOR BARU: The arrest of a man over drugs led the police to a bigger find when they discovered a stash of firearms, a handcuff and al*****most RM40,000 cash inside the suspect’s car here.

State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mokhtar Shariff said police found two semi-automatic guns, 66 bullets, seven revolver bullets, a handcuff and RM38,850 cash when the 28-year-old was detained on June 21 in Taman Pelangi at 11.15pm for possessing a packet of syabu.

Two days later, DCP Mokhtar added, police scored a similar haul in nearby Bandar Dato Onn.

A 31-year-old man, who was behaving peculiarly in the area at 6.40pm, gave himself away when he aroused some policemen’s suspicions.

A round of questioning eventually saw the confiscation of two semi-automatic guns, a revolver, 15 bullets and two packets of drugs from the suspect.

DCP Mokhtar said the suspects, both of whom tested positive for drugs, had criminal records.

In a separate case, seven men were nabbed over a robbery at a hotel in Taman Bayu Puteri here. The suspects, aged between 20 and 26, were detained in and around Permas Jaya and the city centre.

DCP Mokhtar said that in the 4.58pm incident on June 23, four men armed with a samurai sword had robbed a victim.

“Investigations showed the suspects had no criminal records,” he said, adding that apart from the samurai sword, police confiscated two cars, an iron rod and three machetes.

DCP Mokhtar said that with the detention of the nine suspects, Johor police believed they had solved 20 robbery cases in south Johor Baru.
