A man has been jailed for five years for working as a pimp.
The court heard on Thurday that Seng Swee Meng and his Vietnamese wife have been operating an illegal prostitution den from an apartment in Geylang since 2008.
Seng faced 51 charges for offences like harbouring prostitutes, living off their earnings, operating an illegal prostitution den and arranging for underage girls to provide sexual services.
He is believed to be the first person to be sentenced for abetting paid sex with a minor.
During the hearing, it was revealed that Seng and his wife Ngo Tien would instruct young Vietnamese women to only drink with clients but not provide sexual services.
But later, the couple would then “sell” the girls’ virginity for between $1,500 and $2,500 to clients.
If the girls refuse to be sold or hand over their earnings, they would be beaten.
In his mitigation plea, Seng pinned the prostitution racket on his 31-year-old wife.
He claimed that his wife was well-connected in Vietnam and it was she who had convinced him to start a prostitution den after his renovation business failed.
His wife is now on the run after she left for Vietnam with their three-year-old daughter three days before their den was raided by the police.
Seng’s Vietnamese sister-in-law has also been jailed 18 months for acting as an agent in charge of the prostitutes.
His Vietnamese brother-in-law is also believed to be involved in this case and is now on the run.
