By Lee Jia Xin
POLICE have arrested a shop-owner for selling dangerous fireworks on Oct 8. Two teenagers were also nabbed for discharging dangerous fireworks on the same day. The pair were found to have one pack of 'Fun Snaps' fireworks pellets when police caught them in Northpoint Shopping Centre. 'Fun Snaps' are a variant of sandcrackers categorised as dangerous fireworks under the Dangerous Fireworks Act.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the duo had thrown two pellets of 'Fun Snaps' from the second floor of the shopping centre. Following the duo's arrest, police officers raided a shop located in Yishun Street 21 and seized several packs of 'Fun Snaps'. The 68 year-old shop owner was arrested for selling dangerous fireworks. Investigations against the trio are still ongoing.
First-time offenders found guilty of discharging dangerous fireworks can be fined up to $10,000 and/or jailed up to two years. Any person who sells, distributes or imports any dangerous fireworks can be jailed up to two years and caned up to six strokes. Police remind members of the public not to play with such fireworks as it may pose a potential danger to the safety of other people and themselves.
