Armed gang loots former rep's house
KUALA PILAH: Three men armed with machetes broke into the house of a former four-term assemblyman and held a parang to his widow’s neck and tied her up.
Datin Zaleha @ Zabariah Abdul Majid, 67, was then locked up in the bathroom early yesterday before the thieves escaped with a Toyota Vios, cash and other valuables from the double-storey house in Kg Eyor, Johol.
The widow of Datuk Hamzah Yatim was alone at home at that time.
Hamzah was the Johol assemblyman from 1974 to 1988.
Zaleha was sleeping upstairs when she was awakened by noises from the lower floor and decided to investigate.
“As I was coming down the stairs, I was shocked to see three masked men ransacking the hall.
“One of them lunged at me and put a parang to my neck, warning me not to make any noise,” she said, adding that she was pushed into the bathroom before they bound her hands and legs with wire and covered her mouth with a piece of cloth.
She managed to free herself about an hour later and upon realising that the robbers had left, walked to her neighbour’s house to seek help.
She said the thieves had stolen the car as well as RM1,500 in cash, jewellery, an ATM card and a mobile phone.
Kuala Pilah OCPD Supt Azmi Abdul Rahim said the robbers gained entry by forcing open the grilles in the kitchen.
“We found the Vios abandoned in Gemencheh about 3.30pm and are investigating the case under sections 395 and 397of the Penal Code for gang and armed robbery,” he said.
