Apprentice jockey dies after falling from horse

SINGAPORE: An apprentice jockey died from serious injuries sustained during a fall at Kranji on Thursday morning.

The Singapore Turf Club said 25-year-old Wong Wei Xiang was riding the horse, Nopaynohay, on Track Number 3 when he fell.

He was given medical assistance immediately and was sent to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A Singapore Training Academy for Racing graduate, Mr Wong was granted his apprentice jockey's licence by the Malayan Racing Association on January 25, 2012.

The club is giving support to Mr Wong's family and will be conducting an investigation into the accident.

A routine morning of training at the Singapore Turf Club ended in a tragic accident on Thursday.

Up-and-coming apprentice jockey Wong Wei Xiang, 25, died after falling off his horse in a collision with another horse, while training on a track used for slow exercises.

At about 7am, Mr Wong was seen riding on the fibre-sand track used by horses for trotting and cantering.

He was about 100m from the winning post when the accident happened.

It was unclear if he was trampled by the horses.

Trackwatcher William Tay, 50, was observing the morning training when he saw the accident.

Said Mr Tay: “I saw him doing a slow canter, then his horse veered out and hit another horse and he fell.”

A Singapore Turf Club spokesman said Mr Wong died from serious injuries after falling while riding horse Nopaynohay.
