Interesting rumour

Electronics giant Sony rumored for potential Apple acquisition
A new rumor has pegged Apple and its $51 billion in cash and investments as a potential buyer of Sony, prompting the largest trading volume of the Japanese electronics company in 3 months.

The rumors gained steam Tuesday, sending Sony stock up nearly 3 percent at one point, according to Reuters. Sony declined to comment on the rumors, and analysts polled were skeptical of a potential deal, suggesting that if Apple did try to buy Sony, it would be a hostile takeover that would not likely succeed in Japan.

Helping to fuel the rumors was a report issued on Saturday by Barron's that suggested Apple could buy Sony. It also speculated that Adobe and Disney could be potential targets for the Cupertino, Calif., company.

Another possible source for the rumors could be a recent interview former Apple CEO John Sculley did with Bloomberg. Sculley talked about how Apple co-founder Jobs was fascinated by Sony, its products and its manufacturing process. Sculley said that Jobs wanted Apple to be like Sony, not Microsoft.

"I remember (Sony co-founder) Akio Morita gave us one of the first Sony Walkmans," Sculley said. "None of us had ever seen anything like that before, because there had never been a product like that. This was 25 years ago and Steve was fascinated by it. The first thing he did was take it apart, and he looked at every single part. How the fit and finish was done, how it was built."

Apple has more than $51 billion in cash and reserves, and the company was pressed about that money during its quarterly earnings report last week. Jobs told analysts that his company will use that cash for big moves, suggesting that just "one or more" deals could be possible in the near future.

Jobs' comments have fueled speculation of potential major acquisitions, ranging from Sony to Adobe to Facebook. But until now, Apple has only used its cash for small, strategic purchases.

Recent acquisitions include two digital mapping companies -- Placebase and Poly9 -- personal assistant software developer Siri, chipmaker Intrinsity, and digital streaming music service Lala. While the benefits of many of those purchases have not yet been fully realized in Apple's products, the company's acquisition of Quattro Wireless in early 2010 paved the way for the launch of the iAd mobile advertising network in July.

Not surprise...after 20yrs making iPod, it still 1 of the worst sounding mp3 player...those retarded dogs simply hab no clue how to make music sound like music...:D:D:oIo:

The Japanese Selling to Yankees.

This is interesting. I am not sure whether the Japanese will rather harikiri or sell off to Yankees. I doubt it will materialise.

Makes zero sense.

Apple does not need the Sony brand name - the Apple brand is more popular. Mfg is now all outsourced. Sony is down in the low margin trenches fighting out with pretty decent OEM china made products (aiyah all come from same factory).

Perhaps there is the playstation - gaming. But one need not buy a whole company for that.

Doesn't make sense. Sony's brand would cost Apple a bomb to acquire.

If it really goes through, will Apple Shareholders be happy over this decision?

Just find it hard to fathom and also will we ever see a Sony laptop using another OS other than Microsoft Windows when Sony is owned by Apple:p

Why would Sony want to use Apple OS? The business world runs on MS OS so that is where the market is.

Furthermore, Sony laptops have a strong industrial design element to it like Apple.

apple doesn't need sony. but sony needs a new akio morita or a steve jobs.

sometimes when a company wants to bring up their stocks they have to find a way to create rumors ....

Doesn't Sony have a gaijin CEO named Howard Stringer

Read somewhere that Sony is worth US$33.6 billion. Apple is holding US$51billion in hard cash.

Isn't it enough for Apple to buy 51% of Sony:confused: About US$17 billion.

Cash is only one consideration. Not all mergers are beneficial to either side. More sticky issues often arise when 2 giants merge. Things like corporate culture and strategy differences and most sensitive of all, management style. Both are market leaders from very different cultures and neither side would want to change their winning formula. These issues all translate to costs which cannot be measured before the deal.

Apple is much better off going into a product or process alliance with Sony. But I'm sure they have engaged consultants like Bain or Mackinsey to advise them on it.

Besides the Blueray and PS3, none of Sony's products are unique in the market.

The 2 most important assets for Sony now are actually its design and brand. And that's the reason why we are paying more for Sony products. And those are the same strength Apple products have. If it is the manufacturing process Apple is after, they are much better off acquiring a smaller Asian electronic company and growing from there.

Come to think of it, Sony isn't even in the MFI (made for iPod) alliance with Apple. Do any Sony product play the iPod? I haven't see any in the stores.

Alot of debate going on about this rumour.

However Apple does have more than enough $$$$ :)

I have this funny feeling Steve Job could bankrupt Apple because of his arrogance and greed.

Apple and Sony are very different companies. And with that they have different segement of the consumer market. Job wants to control as much as he can, just like he intro Ipod and not concentrate on his nich and that this could kill both his company and the market when everything comes under Apple. There will be no or limited quality of product and Apple will go down, bringing the rest of the world with them

For those who support Steve Job, many does so without thinking how far reaching the result could be.

I think it will be a great investment for Apple, Sony is the no.1 electronics brand in consumer eyes. Looking forward for an Apple camera, that will wowed me, hehehe.

On android catching up with iPhone, I think Jobs won't be bothered by it, look at Apple computers, after so many years, it still occupies the small portion of the market but still rakes huge profit.

But the acquisition is highly possible unless Jobs can promise the Japanese he can bring Sony to the next level. Sony would rather sell itself to Apple rather than Microsoft. :p
