Speculation that Apple will unveil the latest generation of the iPad and the iMac, as well as OS Yosemite, Apple Pay and an update of the iOS 8 is rife after the tech giant sent out invitations for an Oct. 16 event, reports Shanghai's the Paper.

The event at Apple's corporate campus in Cupertino, California has been given the tagline "It's been too long," suggesting that the product to be released has not been updated for quite some time, widely believed to be a reference to the iPad.

Fans believe that Apple will launch a slimmer, lighter iPad air and an iPad mini with a Touch ID fingerprint scanner. Some analysts have stated that Apple may launch a gold iPad at the event.

The event almost coincides with the launch of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sales in China.

According to research by International Data Corporation, while Apple's iPad series still led in the global tablet market in Q2, its market share has dropped from 33% to 26.9% due to fierce competition from Android tablets.

Customers in mainland China are able to preorder Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus from Oct. 10 as the the new smartphones were given the green light to go on sale in the country after their release in the United States on Sept. 19, reports Sichuan's Chengdu Business Daily.

Countering previous media speculation that Apple fans in China would have to wait until the end of the year before the iPhone 6 became available, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology granted approval for the devices to be sold in China on Sept. 30. An Apple press release said preorders would be taken via its official website in China from Oct. 10.

China's three main telecom service providers — China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom — have reportedly not set contract details for the new models, however. Their official websites only give preliminary contract information, according to the report.

Virtual telecom service providers including Suning Appliance, Gome and D.Phone on the other hand have launched iPhone 6 and 6 Plus contract-tied services with promotions, seeking to steal a march on their state-run rivals.

Preorders through Apple's official website are expected to arrive after Oct. 17. Online outlets of Apple's official resellers will offer preorders from Oct. 14, with shipments also expected to arrive in stores from Oct. 17.
