[h=2]Another NSP CEC member resigns from party[/h]

A second Central Executive Council (CEC) member of NSP, Mohamed Fazli Talip,
has announced his resignation from the party.
He wrote on his Facebook page today (24 Aug) that he has submitted his
resignation: “With a heavy heart, I have submitted my resignation from NSP with
immediate effect. I wish the party all the best of luck in the coming GE.”
Mr Fazli contested East Coast GRC under the banner of the Workers’ Party in
the 2011 general election (GE).
Speaking to the media, Mr Fazli, who was one of NSP’s potential candidates for the upcoming GE, explained that he resigned over the events that unfolded over the past week, including the party’s decision to contest MacPherson.
“We want to have opposition unity, and that is why we held the opposition
meeting. But to come from a party that advocates opposition unity, we decided to
go into a three-corner fight. That made me feel a bit disappointed,” he
said.
He added that he will “stand for the opposition cause” in the coming GE.
Last week (17 Aug), NSP’s CEC had decided to support its member Steve Chia’s
wish to contest MacPherson SMC, resulting in a 3-cornered fight against WP and
PAP.
NSP Acting Secretary-General Hazel Poa strongly disagreed with the CEC’s
decision and was the first CEC member to quit the party as a result (‘Hazel
resigns over NSP’s decision to contest MacPherson‘).
“It was a decision I strongly disagreed with, and hence not one I can
implement. As the direction that the party has decided to pursue deviates
greatly from my own, I see no choice other than to resign from the NSP,” Ms Poa
told the press on Wednesday (19 Aug).
“Whilst I disagree with the decision that has been taken, I respect the right
of the CEC as the decision making body of the Party to make that call. I wish
NSP all the best in the coming GE,” she added.
Since then, netizens have been relentlessly campaigning to get Steve Chia not
to contest MacPherson. Netizens simply didn’t want to see a 3-cornered fight
with the ruling PAP. They preferred to see a straight fight between WP and PAP
so as to give the WP candidate the best chance of winning MacPherson.
Most netizens are hoping to see more opposition MPs in Parliament so as to
prevent catastrophes like the 77 vs 13 parliamentary endorsement of the much
hated 6.9 million Population White Paper.
Yesterday (23 Aug), Steve Chia posted a message on his Facebook page [Link] declaring that he will not
be contesting MacPherson SMC as well as the upcoming GE. It’s unclear if he has
also quit the NSP CEC or NSP altogether. In his Facebook post, Steve Chia wrote,
“The Trolls have won.”
“With this notice, I am announcing that I will not be standing for this
coming GE2015 and will not be contesting in MacPherson SMC anymore,” he
added.
“I can only wish WP will send a strong candidate and take down MacPherson SMC
and take KateSpade out of Parliament. From my many conversations with
residents there these 2 days, she is not as strong nor popular as rumours put it
out to be. She has improved, definitely. But many older residents still do not
really know her nor like her. Some have not seen her till recently too.”
“So WP, with a strong brand name, and a stronger candidate sent there, will
have every chance to take her out,” Mr Chia concluded.
NSP President Sebastian Teo convicted of corruption
before
Meanwhile, cyber CSI by netizens has turned up a shocking revelation
regarding NSP President Sebastian Teo. He has apparently been convicted on
corruption charges before. He pleaded guilty to 2 charges of corruption in
November 1979, while 10 other charges were taken into consideration. He was
fined $15,000, and ordered to pay a penalty of $10,500 for the court proceedings
[Link].
He was also bankrupted twice in the 1980′s – once on 17 May 1985 (bankruptcy
number 162/85) [Link]
and a second time on 7 March 1986 (bankruptcy number 319/85) [Link].
Under the Constitution of Singapore, an ex-convict is permitted to become an
MP if his conviction is more than 5 years old [Link].
In any case, Mr Teo did not disclose his conviction or bankruptcies to the
electorate, in the name of transparency, when he stood in previous
elections.
With the resignation of Mr Fazli, there are currently 13 CEC members left in
