High-flier gets jail for selling SAF secrets

He was a high-flier who had been awarded the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Overseas Merit Scholarship and had earned the consideration for promotion to rank of major within five years.

But the $100,000 in debts he had accumulated due to his gambling addiction changed all that.

Phua Poh Sim, 32, was jailed four months and ordered to pay a penalty of $40,400 for providing a defence contractor with confidential information on the purchase of SAF weapons between May and August 2008.

In return for the information given to the contractor, he had received $53,100 in the form of cash loans.

He has himself to blame. I don't know why people like to blame everyone else but themselves when they got into trouble. Gambling has been around for ages, why isn't every Tom, Dick or Harry in debt? Something is wrong with these idiots and if they don't make a change starting with themselves, they will get into other troubles sooner or later.

Gambling and drugs etc. ruined nobody. They ruined themselves. It could be with any vice else. Is MRT evil because people are jumping onto the tracks or is HDB evil because people are skydiving? Is mini-skirt evil because a molester plead temptation of seeing high hemline? You'd end up with all women wearing full Muslim burqa and there'd still be molestation and rape going on. It's the people themselves.

no sir, it save singapore gov a lot of money, can you image, for his whole working life, they have to pay him high salary and a big fat pension. now, the gov dun have to pay him anymore. So, i guess it is a big saving for the state coffer.

This will only tempt other officers to do likewise.
