<!-- CONTENT : start --><!-- End For Web Only -->A frazzled Mr Lim, however, had no one else to rely on that fateful day.
Suspecting something was amiss when his wife locked herself in the bedroom again, he barged in. She was in tears. More horrifyingly, she was holding onto a rope. In that split second, he knew she was about to hang herself.
Shouting in disbelief, he grabbed her.

Mrs Lim had tried to take her life over gambling losses. She was taken to Alexandra Hospital.

"I tried to console her but she just kept crying," Mr Lim told The New Paper last night. At his wits' end, Mr Lim called the press.
But when the newspaper reporters turned up at the Lims' three-room rental flat with the police, an agitated Mrs Lim grabbed a penknife from a drawer and threatened to kill herself if they did not leave.
In the ensuing commotion, the blade pressed into her left palm and cut her.
An upset Mr Lim said in a mix of Mandarin and Hokkien: "I never expected things to turn out this way. She's so kind-hearted and shy. She kept saying she's not mad. How will she face the neighbours after this?"
Dressed in a pair of yellow bermudas, the tattooed 1.7m-tall man, who is jobless, sagged against the living room table.
Looking defeated, he admitted he does not know how much money his wife had lost.
"She won't tell me. She just said it's many thousands of dollars. Her younger sister is helping her pay it off."
It seems Mrs Lim was unable to resist the lure of easy money. After working from 6am to 11am, she was supposed to babysit her sister's twins in Sengkang.
Instead, the petite woman made a beeline for the gaming tables and jackpot machines of Resorts World Sentosa.
"She told me she was on a winning streak at the beginning. So she got hooked on gambling. But after a while, she kept losing and she tried unsuccessfully to get it back," Mr Lim sighed.
The couple has no children. Mrs Lim is now receiving treatment.
Surveying his sparse rental flat, Mr Lim added: "She'll be devastated if she sees the (Chinese) papers. I don't know if she'll come back after this. Maybe we'll have to move out but I don't know where to go."
A police spokesman said they received a call on Tuesday at about 5pm asking for assistance. A 50-year-old woman was taken to Alexandra Hospital and treated for minor injuries.
She has been arrested for attempted suicide and police investigations are ongoing.
