The online hacktivist group Anonymous is gearing up to carry out attacks on Chinese government websites in a bid to uncover corruption and lobby for human rights, a member of the group said on April 9. The story was first revealed by Reuters.
The group used the Twitter account "Anonymous China" to publicize the planned attacks and also posted hyperlinks to data files containing passwords and other personal information from hacked websites.
"First, we want to alert the Chinese government that we are not afraid, and we are going to show the truth and fight for justice," the hacker "f0ws3r" told Reuters.
The news agency said that its reporter contacted the hacker through the group's Twitter page. The group is reported to consist of 10 to 12 hackers, most of whom are not based in China. "f0ws3r"
claimed that "hundreds" of translators are working with them on the attacks and said that there will be more serious hacking attacks against major government websites in the near future.
"We are planning more attacks, a few at a time," the hacker said, adding that the plan is to take down the so-called "Great Firewall of China" that blocks access to information on the internet for Chinese users
Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other western-based social networking websites remain blocked in China as of press time. The websites of various Chinese government departments were reportedly hacked last week but were operating normally as of April 9.
