Xinhua International Review: U.S. suppresses Chinese media for humiliation
2020-03-18 00:59:38 Source: Xinhuanet
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, March 18th, the question: US suppression of Chinese media is humiliating
Xinhua News Agency reporter
The US State Department recently used the so-called "reciprocity principle" as an excuse to limit the number of Chinese employees of five Chinese media in the United States and expelled Chinese media reporters in disguise. This set a "record" for a government in a large disguise to expel journalists from other countries on a large scale in disguise in the history of world journalism, leaving a difficult stain for the United States, which has long advertised itself as a "model" and "defender" of press freedom.
US government policymakers are not completely unaware of this. Therefore, in response to media queries, they declared that "this is only a restriction on the number, not an expulsion", and they repeatedly attacked "China restricts the freedom of press of foreign journalists in China" and sought for their unreasonable crackdown on Chinese journalists. Zi Xu's unexcusable excuses.
However, the first complaint of the wicked cannot obliterate the truth, and a loud voice does not mean that it has occupied the moral high ground. The U.S. State Department has been planning to "shoot" Chinese media for a long time. For some time, the US embassy and consulate in China has repeatedly implemented lengthy "administrative reviews" of visa applications for Chinese media to the United States, including family members or family members of journalists who have applied for visas.
When the "sudden attack" is formally launched, the US State Department has put aside the legal basis and procedural justice, and made all sorts of ridiculous actions. For example, since the Chinese media have been classified as "foreign missions" and "government representatives", they have declared that they will never give any "corresponding diplomatic treatment" to Chinese journalists in the United States, and will continue to manage them with "media visas" These reporters; for another example, knowing that the flights between China and the United States have drastically decreased, they still forced dozens of Chinese reporters to leave the United States as soon as possible within a very short period of time. In all these cases, Americans with a conscience have expressed "unbelievable"!
It is obvious to all that Chinese media reporters in the United States have done only one thing for decades: strictly abide by US laws and regulations, adhere to journalistic ethics, and carry out news reporting in accordance with the principles of objectivity, fairness, truth, and accuracy; They did not engage in ideological output or enthusiasm for "digging the shady" or "exploding speculation." Their reports stand the test of history and time.
Regrettably, the United States ignores the facts and behaves in a way that is unreasonable. When the media asked, did you catch any evidence that the Chinese media reported a problem? The answer is "no need"; when asked, "Many countries also have state-owned media, why single out Chinese media to suppress it?" The answer was even more stark: "This time we are targeting China."
Through the stubborn attitude of the US side and its aggressive pressure to exert pressure, the discerning person can see its deep weakness and self-confidence. Once upon a time, the so-called "universal value" including freedom of the press was a trump card for the United States to export its ideology and show its "soft power" to the world. Today, the United States has gradually developed to the point of suffering from the "ideological invasion" delusion because of its loss of self-confidence and institutional self-confidence. It has even tried to create a chilling effect by expelling journalists from other countries, reporting to the outside world and understanding the United States. Build a "wall".
In fact, the US government's suppression of the Chinese media not only did nothing to solve its own problems, but also sent a signal of loss of faith to the global media, including its American counterparts, as a shame. What the US should do right now is to immediately take steps to correct wrong practices such as putting discriminatory labels on Chinese media, limiting the number of Chinese journalists, and setting up visa barriers for Chinese journalists in the United States to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese media journalists in the United States. , Going further and further down the wrong path.

On the last day, the United States attacked 60 Chinese journalists. The Chinese spokesman had to accompany him to the end
2020-03-13 13:36 Watch ideal news
At a time when China ’s 1.4 billion people are united in their efforts to fight the new crown pneumonia epidemic, the US State Department has issued a series of discriminatory measures against Chinese media agencies in the United States for unreasonable reasons. After previously announcing the five Chinese media as "foreign diplomatic missions," the United States also announced that it would take restrictions on the number of Chinese employees in the five media under control from March 13.

The so-called "foreign diplomatic missions" are mainly related to the "Diplomatic Missions Law" promulgated by the United States in 1982. According to the provisions of the law, foreign missions include two types: one is any mission, institution or entity involved in diplomatic, consular or other activities. The second is missions, institutions or entities that are actually owned or effectively controlled by foreign governments or organizations representing sovereign or political entities. The reason the US State Department used the "Diplomatic Missions Act" to list the five branches of Chinese news in the United States as "foreign diplomatic missions" is that they believe that it fits the second situation.

It should be pointed out that once the US measures come into effect, the five Chinese news agencies in the United States will report all personnel to the US State Department and register all leased or owned properties. In addition, all the personnel of these five news organizations need to make travel declarations as well as the staff of the embassy, and personnel changes and financial conditions must also be subject to review and supervision by the United States.

Some analysts pointed out that the US move is precisely disguising Chinese journalists. This practice has seriously infringed on the normal and legitimate rights and interests of Chinese journalists in overseas news reporting, seriously damaged the reputation of Chinese media and Chinese journalists, and seriously disrupted the normal overseas operations of Chinese media organizations and the normal work of Chinese journalists overseas. At present, there are about 160 Chinese journalists working in the United States. According to the United States' decision, Chinese journalists in the United States will be reduced by at least 60.

By all accounts, the United States has only the last day to expel 60 Chinese journalists in disguise. In response, Hua Chunying, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has already made a clear statement. She pointed out that the U.S. State Department's deadline to require Chinese media in the United States to significantly reduce the number of journalists is a "actual deportation" of Chinese media reporters, without any basis. The reason is that the US side's political suppression based on Cold War thinking and ideological prejudice exposed the hypocrisy of the so-called "freedom of the press", as well as the naked "double standards" and hegemonic bullying. China firmly opposes this and strongly reprimands it. Now that the United States has announced the start of the game, China will sacrifice to the end.

Amid the epidemic of New Coronary Pneumonia (COVID-19) and the escalation of the media war between China and the United States, China announced in the early morning of March 18, Beijing time that the US media reporters were further expelled.

U.S. government and media slam Beijing eviction order

The National Security Council (NSC) responded on Twitter on March 17: "China's decision to expel (US media) reporters from China is another step in depriving the Chinese people and the world of access to true Chinese information."

The National Security Council also called on China to shift its focus from “deporting journalists” and “spreading fake news” to working with all countries to stop the spread of Wuhan coronavirus.

At the same time, US Secretary of State Pompeo responded at a press conference on March 17th, hoping that China would reconsider.

US Secretary of State Pompeo

In addition, the three major newspapers in the United States deported journalists also criticized Beijing. The Wall Street Journal editor-in-chief Murray responded on Twitter that China's move was an unprecedented attack on press freedom, and the newspaper opposed government interference in press freedom anywhere in the world.

"The Washington Post" executive editor Byron also issued a statement saying that China's decision is particularly regrettable because it was made in the context of an unprecedented global crisis, and the relevant international community's response to COVID-19 is now Clear and reliable information is essential. What China is now seeking to strictly restrict the flow of this information will only make the situation worse.

"The New York Times" executive editor Baku said that the reporter has been working in China since the 1850s. It is vital that the two countries resolve disputes quickly and allow journalists to provide information to the public. The health and safety of people around the world depend on impartial reporting on their two largest economies.

Sino-U.S. Media eviction war upgrade process

It is reported that the United States listed five Chinese media in the United States as "foreign missions" in February, which caused strong dissatisfaction in China. In the meantime, the US "Wall Street Journal" published an article on the new crown pneumonia epidemic, which aggravated China's dissatisfaction. China then announced the deportation of three Wall Street Journal correspondents in Beijing.

The United States has criticized Beijing for interfering with free speech and has responded. US Secretary of State Pompeo ordered on March 2 the Chinese media in the five US countries to significantly reduce their staff and disguise Chinese journalists in the United States in disguise. Under the new restrictions, the Chinese employees of these Chinese institutions in the United States will be reduced from the current total of 160 to 100.

On March 18, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China issued a statement announcing that, in response to the US ’s drastic reduction and the actual deportation of employees of Chinese media agencies in the US, the Chinese side required that the “New York Times”, “Wall Street Journal”, and “Washington Post” expiry of press passes before the end of American journalists will declare the list to the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs within 4 days from today, and return the press card within 10 days. In the future, they will not be allowed to continue to work as journalists in China, including Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions.

China counters U.S. control, expels 3 U.S. newspaper reporters

The media urged the governments of the United States and China to resolve the dispute as soon as possible and should not deprive the media of the freedom to report the truth, especially the current period of the new crown epidemic. Real and reliable information is especially important at the moment. (Figure: Internet)

(New York, March 18, 2020) As the US tightens its control over Chinese "media" in the United States, the Chinese authorities have also ordered all journalists working for three US media in mainland China to return their "media cards" within 10 days. And then leave China.

The three media outlets include the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal.

According to the British "The Guardian", Chinese authorities usually only issue visas and media cards to journalists for 12 months, so this move will affect most journalists and force many people with decades of Chinese reporting experience. The reporter leaves. Not only will they be barred from working in mainland China, they will also be barred from working in Hong Kong.

The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal issued separate statements to attack China after a large-scale deportation of American journalists, bombarding the Chinese move as "irresponsible", with a "cold war" Thinking, and launched an "unprecedented attack" on media freedom, especially as the current epidemic of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) is spreading globally.

"New York Times" executive editor pointed out that China's practice of expelling foreign journalists is extremely immoral, especially the "pandemic" of the new crown virus epidemic has not ended. The newspaper committee pointed out that the above-mentioned sanctions by China are "an unfortunate reenactment of the Cold War" and should not be at such a bad time. This is because the new crown virus is spreading globally and everyone needs independent and reliable information, especially for information from Origin of the epidemic-all relevant information on China.

Chinese media in the United States mixed with spies?

In response to China's counterattack after the United States strengthened its control over Chinese official media, the New York Times committee said that American publishers could not compare it with organizations dispatched by the "Soviet" and "Chinese Communist" overseas. "This is because they are known to include spies in their huge staff." The committee also noted that China does not like reports that do not favor them.

Gerry Shih, a reporter for The Washington Post in China, also faces the fate of deportation. He pointed out via Twitter that interviews in China have become increasingly difficult; Editor Matt Murray described the Chinese move as "an unprecedented attack on media freedom in times of crisis."

Marty Baron, executive editor of The Washington Post, said: "We explicitly condemn the deportation of American journalists by China. In particular, the world is currently facing an unprecedented crisis, and international clear and reliable information on COVID-19 has been obtained. At a crucial time, the Chinese authorities' move was very regrettable. China's strict restrictions on the flow of such information will only make the situation worse.

Dean Baquet, executive editor of the New York Times, noted that China had made a "grave mistake" and urged the US and Chinese governments to resolve the dispute as soon as possible. "We strongly condemn the Chinese authorities' decision to expel U.S. journalists, and this action is particularly irresponsible at a time when the world needs free, public and reliable information about the New Coronavirus pandemic."

The three newspapers whose employees were expelled, as well as two other American newspapers, Time and Voice of America, were also required to "declare in writing their employees, finances, operations in China And real estate information. "

China claims this move is a counterattack against unreasonable US controls

China said it was a response to the US ’s tightening of controls on Chinese official media agencies last month, which the United States classified as official foreign missions. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated: "In recent years, the US government has unwarranted restrictions on Chinese media organizations and individuals in the United States, deliberately making it difficult for Chinese media to report, causing them to suffer more and more. Discrimination and politically motivated oppression. "

"The above measures (to expel the US media) are absolutely necessary and a response to the actions of the US authorities. China is forced to fight back against the unreasonable oppression of Chinese media organizations in the United States."

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo later refuted the comparison by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, saying that (Chinese) journalists in the United States enjoyed freedom of the press that does not exist in China.

"The people we confirmed a few weeks ago (incorporated in foreign missions) are not the media. They are members of the Chinese Propaganda Agency. We have identified these foreign missions under US law. (China) These are not Apple-to-Apple (Comparative), I regret China's decision today, which further deprives the world of press freedom. "

Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, March 19 (Reporter Wang Zhuolun) Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular press conference on the 19th that the Chinese media have been tolerating the suppression and discriminatory practices of the US for too long, but failed to make perfect. The US side has intensified, and China will be forced to take relevant measures against US media reporters in accordance with the principle of reciprocity.

A reporter asked: In response to U.S. suppression of Chinese media agencies in the United States, China announced countermeasures on the 18th. The third article mentioned that the United States has adopted discriminatory restrictions on Chinese journalists in visas, administrative examinations, and interviews. China will take reciprocal measures against American journalists in this regard. Can you introduce specific examples of US restrictions? What exactly are the reciprocal measures China will take?

Geng Shuang said that the US has adopted discriminatory restrictive measures against Chinese journalists. The China Association of Records has announced it, and relevant Chinese media have also recently disclosed it. In recent years, the U.S. government has unreasonably restricted the normal news reporting activities of Chinese media agencies and personnel stationed in the United States, making it unreasonably difficult, and has escalated discrimination and political suppression of Chinese media.

He said that the normal order of life and work of Chinese media reporters in the United States was severely disrupted, and many people were unable to return to the United States to work because of the U.S. refusal of visas for no reason, and were asked to provide many additional materials when applying for visas. In particular, in December 2018, the United States requested relevant Chinese media agencies in the United States to register as "foreign agents." In February 2020, five Chinese media agencies in the United States were listed as "foreign missions." U.S. agencies have taken measures to limit the number of people and disguised a large number of Chinese media reporters in disguise.

"Facts have fully proved that the so-called press freedom advertised by the United States is very hypocritical and deceptive. China has repeatedly made solemn representations to the United States on the United States' wrong practices, expressing its firm opposition and strong condemnation." Geng Shuang said.

Geng Shuang said that when encountering unfair treatment and unreasonable suppression, facing "double standards" and hegemonic bullying, the Chinese Record Association has disclosed the US on behalf of the Chinese media, showing a firm opposition. "We support the Chinese media to firmly safeguard their own reputation and interests, and China will be forced to take relevant measures against American media reporters in accordance with the principle of reciprocity."
