Op-Ed 'Calexit' would be a disaster for progressive values

Imagine if President Trump announced that he wanted to oust California from the United States. If it weren't for us, after all, Trump would have won the popular vote he so lusts after by 1.4 million. Blue America would lose its biggest source of electoral votes in all future elections. The Senate would have two fewer Democrats. The House of Representatives would lose 38 Democrats and just 14 Republicans. The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, among the most liberal in the nation, would be changed irrevocably. And the U.S. as a whole would suddenly be a lot less ethnically diverse than it is today.

For those reasons, Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Republicans with White House ambitions, opponents of legalizing marijuana, advocates of criminalizing abortion and various white nationalist groups might all conclude –– for different reasons –– that they would benefit politically from a separation, even as liberals and progressives across America would correctly see it as a catastrophe.

So it makes sense that the leader of the Yes California Independence Campaign, Marcus Ruiz Evans, was — contrary to popular assumptions — a registered Republican when he formed the separatist group two years ago, according to the San Jose Mercury News. He briefly hosted conservative talk radio shows in Fresno, and would not tell the newspaper if he voted for Trump.

'Calexit' movement wants California to secede
A group trying to get California to secede from the United States said the results of the presidential election give their cause new momentum.
There is a subset of people here, mostly from the privileged classes, who feel sullied by their political affiliation with Red America.
And yet he’s pitching independence to Golden State progressives. In a Mercury News op-ed article, Evans announced that his organization will soon start circulating a petition for a “Calexit” vote and thus begin the long, multi-step process for withdrawal from the United States. “Californians are better educated, wealthier, more liberal, and value healthcare and education more than the rest of the country,” he argued. “Our views on education, science, immigration, taxation and healthcare are different.”

The Yes California Independence website, moreover, is clearly addressed to Trump-haters, some of whom tweeted out support for a Calexit after election day. If Trump’s enemies go down this road, he doesn’t need friends.

At a moment of great urgency, as a subset of those who govern us veer toward authoritarianism, Yes California Independence is sucking up attention on a gambit that is highly unlikely to succeed, and that existentially threatens Democrats if it does. The 2018 midterms could change the course of U.S. history. They will determine whether Trump will continue to govern without meaningful restraint from congressional Republicans — who've abandoned conservative principles to exploit his populism — or face a newly invigorated opposition party willing to investigate his conflicts of interest.

There’s a huge downside to the Calexit movement, and no real upside.

For decades California has exerted more influence on American politics and culture than vice versa. Secession would not improve our values. But it would practically ensure that the rest of the U.S. would drift farther away from our laid-back tolerance and easygoing diversity. And they'd still be our neighbors, geographic reality unchanged by political independence.

It reminds me of the old joke about a libertarian complaining to a conservative about civil liberties violations in America. "Bah! Love it or leave it," the conservative scolds. "What," the libertarian retorts, "and subject myself to its abusive foreign policy?"

Many of the arguments offered by the Yes California Independence Committee don’t even pass a sniff test. "California has some of the best universities," one talking point begins, "but in various ways, our schools are among the worst in the country." If most other states are outperforming us in education, why would secession be necessary for improvement?

"California is a global leader on environmental issues," another item begins. "However, as long as the other states continue debating whether or not climate change is real, they will continue holding up real efforts to reduce carbon emissions." But if the United States minus California continues to do little or nothing nothing to combat climate change, Californians — along with the rest of the world — will suffer.

America breaking up is good ...California and New York should be independent and they can form a union. The red-neck states can then be left to themselves. Let the deplorables do themselves in.

Calexit? California paves way for independence vote

Grassroots organisers have received the green light to start campaigning for California to secede from the United States.

Spurred by widespread discontent towards Donald Trump’s presidency, the Yes California group has begun collecting signatures to pave the way for the western US state to effectively become its own independent country.

On Thursday 26th Jan., California’s Secretary of State Alex Padilla cleared a potential ballot measure which would amend the state’s constitution.

The measure would legally remove the state as an “inseparable part of the United States of America” and would withdraw California from the authority of the US Constitution.

Yes California needs to collect 585,407 valid signatures from registered voters by 25th July. If they succeed, the vote to amend the state’s constitution will be included on a 2018 ballot, which, if approved, would open up Californians to vote on full independence from the United States by 2019.

If at least 50 percent of registered voters participate in the 2019 vote, and if at least 55 percent vote in favour of secession, Californians will consider the ballot their declaration of independence from the US federal government.

“As the sixth largest economy in the world, California is more economically powerful than France and has a population larger than Poland,” says the group on its website. “Point by point, California compares and competes with countries, not just the 49 other states [of the United States].”

The initiative is being spearheaded by Louis J. Marinelli and Marcus Ruiz Evans who have been campaigning for secession for the greater part of two years.

Marinelli in 2015 failed to gain traction on a separate ballot measure which would have elevated the status of California into a “sovereign” state equal to that of the United States – like Scotland to the United Kingdom.

Yes California argues Californians are culturally different from the rest of the United States and unfairly suffer from national media attention accusing the state of being out of touch with the rest of the country.

The group also decries what it sees as California paying more in federal taxes to the United States than what it receives in federal funding – arguments that resemble those offered by other independence movements that include the UK Independence Party and proponents of Catalonia’s independence from Spain.

Using the hashtag #Calexit, the group claims it has 8,000 registered volunteers and 19,000 signatures to its online petition. Its Facebook page has more than 33,600 likes and followers.

The movement also has an “embassy” – in Russia – to serve as a cultural centre to promote trade and tourism. Marinelli has lived on and off in Russia and has a Russian born wife.

In January 2017, a Reuters study found that one in every three Californians polled supports the peaceful withdrawal of the state from the United States.

“There is such hostility towards Trump that many citizens believe it would be smarter to leave than fight,” Democratic political consultant Steve Maviglio told Reuters.

According to Reuters, Yes California’s email list after the US presidential election grew from fewer than 2,500 to more than 115,000.

“We’re doing it now because of all of the overwhelming attention,” Evans told the Los Angeles Times. “This is real. We treat it seriously.”

Yes California is not the only initiative that has tried to reshape California in recent years. In 2014, a proposal to split the state into six separate states failed to reach the required votes for a 2016 ballot. The move was promoted by Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper.

Nor is California the only state in the United States that is currently considering, or has considered, secession. The southern US state of Texas along the country’s border with Mexico, has also had whispers of “Texit” since the UK’s vote to leave the European Union.

Texas Republicans, in May 2016, narrowly avoided adding in their party platform language sympathetic to Texas secessionists.

Both Texas and California were once independent countries before joining the United States in the 19th century.

The Republic of California lasted only 26 days in 1846 when US settlers revolted against the Mexican government. The rebellion would quickly be absorbed into the Mexican-American War.

The Republic of Texas was an independent country from 1836 until 1846 and during the US Civil War, attempted and failed to break away from the US federal government.

The United States constitution provides no legal framework to allow states within the country to break away.

To peacefully secede California would have to amend the US constitution and have the amendment be approved by either two-thirds of congress or two thirds of all 50 states.

Throughout the country’s 240-year history the US constitution has been amended only 17 times.

The 2019 #Calexit Independence Referendum
In the Spring of 2019, Californians will go to the polls in a historic vote to decide by referendum if California should exit the Union, a #Calexit vote.

You will have this historic opportunity because the Yes California Independence Campaign will qualify a citizen’s initiative for the 2018 ballot that if passed would call for a special election for Californians to vote for or against the independence of California from the United States.

This is a very important question. It is the responsibility of this campaign to explain what a yes vote will mean for you, your family, your community, our state, our country, and our world. We have designed this website to answer many of these questions and look to you to ask more.

"As the sixth largest economy in the world, California is more economically powerful than France and has a population larger than Poland. Point by point, California compares and competes with countries, not just the 49 other states.”

In our view, the United States of America represents so many things that conflict with Californian values, and our continued statehood means California will continue subsidizing the other states to our own detriment, and to the detriment of our children.

Although charity is part of our culture, when you consider that California’s infrastructure is falling apart, our public schools are ranked among the worst in the entire country, we have the highest number of homeless persons living without shelter and other basic necessities, poverty rates remain high, income inequality continues to expand, and we must often borrow money from the future to provide services for today, now is not the time for charity.

However, this independence referendum is about more than California subsidizing other states of this country. It is about the right to self-determination and the concept of voluntary association, both of which are supported by constitutional and international law.

It is about California taking its place in the world, standing as an equal among nations. We believe in two fundamental truths: (1) California exerts a positive influence on the rest of the world, and (2) California could do more good as an independent country than it is able to do as just a U.S. state.

In 2016, the United Kingdom voted to leave the international community with their “Brexit” vote. Our “Calexit” referendum is about California joining the international community. You have a big decision to make.

Yes California is here to help.

THE CASE FOR INDEPENDENCE IN 9 SIMPLE POINTS
Being a U.S. state is no longer serving California’s best interests. On issues ranging from peace and security to natural resources and the environment, it has become increasingly true that California would be better off as an independent country. Here’s a summary of why we think so.

1. PEACE AND SECURITY
The U.S. Government spends more on its military than the next several countries combined. Not only is California forced to subsidize this massive military budget with our taxes, but Californians are sent off to fight in wars that often do more to perpetuate terrorism than to abate it. The only reason terrorists might want to attack us is because we are part of the United States and are guilty by association. Not being a part of that country will make California a less likely target of retaliation by its enemies.

2. ELECTIONS AND GOVERNMENT
California’s electoral votes haven’t affected a presidential election since 1876. On top of that, presidential election results are often known before our votes are even counted. So, why should we keep subjecting ourselves to presidents we play no role in electing, to 382 representatives and 98 senators we can’t vote for, and all the government officials and federal judges appointed by those very same people we don’t elect.

3. TRADE AND REGULATION
The U.S. Government maintains a burdensome trade system that hurts California’s economy by making trade more difficult and more expensive for California’s businesses. As long as California remains within this burdensome trade system, we will never be able to capitalize on the trade and investment opportunities that would be available to us as an independent country. On top of that, the United States is dragging California into the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement which conflicts with our values.

4. DEBT AND TAXES
Since 1987, California has been subsidizing the other states at a loss of tens and sometimes hundreds of billions of dollars in a single fiscal year. As a result, we are often forced to raise taxes and charge fees in California, and borrow money from the future to make up the difference. This is partly why California presently has some of the highest taxes in the country, and so much debt. Independence means that all of our taxes will be kept in California based on the priorities we set, and we will be able to do so while repaying our debts and phasing out the current state income tax.

5. IMMIGRATION
California is the most diverse state in the United States and that is something we are proud of. This diversity is a central part of our culture and an indispensable part of our economy. As a U.S. state, our immigration system was largely designed by the 49 other states thirty years ago. This immigration system has since neglected the needs of the California economy and has hurt too many California families. Independence means California will be able to decide what immigration policies make sense for our diverse and unique population, culture, and economy, and that we’ll be able to build an immigration system that is consistent with our values.

6. NATURAL RESOURCES
Certain minerals and other natural resources like coal, oil, and natural gas are being extracted from California at below market value rates by private corporations with the permission of the U.S. Government. While a small portion of the revenue is shared with us, our share has been withheld during times of sequestration. That means the U.S. Government is paying their debts with royalties collected from selling off California’s natural resources. Independence means we will gain control of the 46% of California that is currently owned by the U.S. Government and its agencies. We will therefore take control of our natural resources and be the sole beneficiary of royalties collected if and when they are extracted from our lands.

7. THE ENVIRONMENT
California is a global leader on environmental issues. However, as long as the other states continue debating whether or not climate change is real, they will continue holding up real efforts to reduce carbon emissions. The truth is this country accounts for less than five percent of the world’s population yet consumes one-third of the world’s paper, a quarter of the world’s oil, 27 percent of the aluminum, 23 percent of the coal, and 19 percent of the copper. Independence means California will be able to negotiate treaties to not only reduce the human impact on our climate but also to help build global resource sustainability.

8. HEALTH AND MEDICINE
The Affordable Care Act was enacted by the U.S. Government to lower the cost of health care and expand health insurance coverage to the uninsured, yet millions of Californians still lack access to quality health care because they can’t afford it. For many, access to hospitals and medicine is a life or death issue. Independence means we can fund the health care programs we want and ensure everyone has access to the medicines they need because our taxes will no longer be subsidizing other states. Finally, California can join the rest of the industrialized world in guaranteeing health care as a universal right for all of our people.

9. EDUCATION
California has some of the best universities but in various ways, our schools are among the worst in the country. Not only does this deprive our children of the education they deserve, but it also costs taxpayers billions in social services and law enforcement expenses linked to lacking opportunities resulting from poor education. Independence means we will be able to fully fund public education, rebuild and modernize public schools, and pay public school teachers the salaries they deserve. On top of that, independence means freedom from federal education policies and one-size-fits-all standards set by political appointees on the other side of the continent.

Yes California is the nonviolent campaign to establish the country of California using any and all legal and constitutional means to do so. We advocate for peaceful secession from the United States by use of an independence referendum to establish a mandate, followed by a nationwide campaign to advocate in support of a constitutional exit from the Union. By joining this campaign, signing up as a member, donating, volunteering, or otherwise supporting this important cause, you agree to these nonviolent principles.
While Yes California supports and encourages Californians to stand up and take direct action, to be bold, and to unapologetically demand the liberation of the people of California from its captors, we explicitly reject conduct or speech inciting open rebellion against the American government.

If that happens now, what can the federal government do? Nothing.

California is bankrupt. Trump would be happy to get rid of them just as he dealt with his unsuccessful business ventures by cutting them free and leaving them to rot.

If California can secede..Than Texas would have done it long ago... Secession is illegal in the USA

Now there are lots of hateful Americans wanting to Expell California from USA as well.

USA will lost most of it's West Coast after Calexit. About 65% Gone!
