针对新型空天飞行器、火箭发动机、原子能等领域重大需求,范景莲开辟出“纳米/微纳复合高性能难熔金属基复合材料”新领域,并取得一系列重大突破,发展出有关材料制备技术。

范景莲团队的产品投产后,到2019年3月,已经成为我国航空航天、国防军工、兵器船舶等领域多个型号产品的唯一供应商。
2018年8月,我国“星空2号”乘波体高超声速飞行器试飞成功。完成了主动段转弯、级间分离、试飞器自主飞行、弹道大机动转弯等可控高速机动飞行动作。

目前各国的有关技术路线,一面创新研制更好新一代的材料,满足高超声速飞行的耐高温、高强热等工程难题,另一面是引入“制冷技术”,从另一个维度解决摩擦高温等问题。范景莲团队的工作属于前者。

为了提高飞行器速度,超燃冲压发动机让高速气流直接“冲”入燃烧室点火燃烧,美国人曾经这样形容其中难度“相当于在飓风之中点燃1根火柴,还要让它稳定燃烧”,美国X-51超燃冲压发动机因为采用传统单凹腔燃烧室设计,燃烧难以控制,结果试飞之中屡战屡败,不得不宣布黯然下马,现在美国通过与澳大利亚联合进行的HIFiRE计划对采用多凹腔燃烧室的超燃冲压发动机进行技术验证和测试,相关技术还在发展之中,所以美国人得知凌云一号试飞成功,由衷称之为一个里程碑式成就。
