台灣以人情味聞名世界,但在台居住10多年,擔任高中英文老師的南非人杜莫內,想要將在燦坤買的咖啡機交回原廠送修,卻因為未用中文向店員對話,被店經理回「這裡是台灣,我們只說中文!」讓他相當傻眼,認為大型的電器量販公司,竟是這樣的待客方式。

根據《蘋果日報》報導,杜莫內表示,他前年8月到燦坤台中新東海店購買了一台6000多元的咖啡機,但3月卻故障,於是將機器送回門市,希望能協助聯絡原廠維修,並表明,維修費多少他都願意支付。
但燦坤卻告訴他,維修費會超過2000元,因此建議他不如買一台新的,但他仍堅持維修。日後他再詢問店家是否有送回原廠,店家卻告訴他機器已過保固,但維修費降為700元,追問之下發現燦坤根本沒有把機器送回去。

杜莫內表示,事後他決定自己與原廠聯絡,原廠告訴他機器仍在保固內,也派員將機器取走免費維修送回,讓他質疑燦坤做法明顯有問題,且在與店經理溝通時,店經理曾對他說「Here is Taiwan, We only speak Chinese!」(這裡是台灣,我們只說中文),打到台北總公司投訴,也沒有人會講英文,無人與他道歉。
對此,燦坤公關表示,客戶的咖啡機保固到今年8月為止,送修時因為語言隔閡,加上客戶沒有提到有在官網上註冊延長保固,因此店家才會判定過保,至於2000元則是原廠報出的維修費,後面的700元是檢測費用,公司將配置英語客服,若再遇上外國客戶,能協助服務。
