Of the 7,251 foreign students who applied for permanent residency (PR) between the years 2000 and 2017, 5,932 were granted PR status, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Josephine Teo on Tuesday (6 February).

Speaking in Parliament, Teo added that of these permanent residents, 1,072 subsequently took up citizenship as at the end of 2017. Eighty-five of them have renounced their permanent residency.

The Minister was responding to a parliamentary question from her fellow Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC MP Saktiandi Supaat, who wanted to know the trend among foreign students applying for PR status in Singapore in the last decade.

In response to Supaat’s supplementary question on the nationalities of the students whose applications were successful, Teo said she did not have the detailed breakdown, adding that it would reflect the profile of the foreign student population in Singapore.

“I think a good majority of them would come from Asia,” said Teo.

What kind of answer is this-the Minister cannot obtain the nationalities from his own ministry?

Knn Josephine Teo with only 5,932 spread over 17 years how the fuck you going to create more jobs for Singaporeans? Open the floodgates I say.

How come so many Ah Tiongs, Ah Nehs and Ah Noy then? Why our MPs don't know how to ask proper questions? What's the point of asking how many students granted PR? MPs should be asked to state their rationale for asking questions.

It will take 53 man years to obtain that...70% ah neh, 30% a tiong, 20% others...pinoys, Mynamars.etc

must be majority are jiu hiu kias

Used to be, or Indonesian Chinese; but numbers are dwindling for Stinkapore, no longer an attractive destination to them, more ah neh's..the finance minister, ah neh, law minister ah neh..president before KFC Tan was ah neh, current was, but now isn't.

We have Chennai Business Park in Changi, Indian Business Park in Jurong East, soon, Punjab Digital District, more ah nehs! now.

Students are the least economically active contributors to any economy. They only gain by being a PR is getting PR school fees and other subsidies.

Seriously, the ah neh geeks at Chennai Business Park in Changi, Indian Business Park in Jurong East, soon, Punjab Digital District are all preparing to jump ship to Silicon Valley, Melbourne, or these days, the tech hubs all over the EU. Our local geeks need to learn and up their game and get the hell outta Stinkapore.

If the Ah Nehs leave, the Ah Tiongs and Ah Noys will take over. Sinkees still have to wait for turn.
