SINGAPORE: Two men who allegedly pawned fake gold jewellery have been arrested.

Police said since April 2014, there has been a spate of cheating cases involving the pawning of fake gold jewellery at pawnshops islandwide.

Police said the suspects, both aged 28, would visit the pawnshops and pass off the fake jewellery as genuine ones in exchange for cash.

Investigations showed that the two suspects are involved in a few cheating cases involving more than S$7,000.

Police found fake gold jewellery in one of the suspect's possession.

If convicted, the suspects each face a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.

Pawnshop owners are advised to be vigilant against such scams and to check and verify the identities of individuals who pawn items at their shops as well as their guarantors before completing each transaction. - CNA/ac
