PETALING JAYA: MCA has welcomed the return of the 321 Malay and Iban-language bibles seized from the Bible of Society of Malaysia (BSM).
"This is a right decision. It is encouraging to know that we have finally seen light at the end of the tunnel," said the party's Religious Harmony Bureau chief Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker.
While welcoming the return, he said the seizure should not have happened in the first place.
"In the spirit of the law, the Constitution and our multi-racial society, it is unhealthy for the religious authorities to extend their jurisdiction to non-Muslims," he said.
In KLANG, Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali said the bibles had been returned to its rightful owners.
"I had pledged to have the Bibles returned to the Christians because they belong to them,'' Azmin said in a media statement Friday.
He had earlier witnessed the return of the bibles to the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) by Selangor Religious Authorities.
He thanked the Sultan for his wisdom, which had been fundamental in ending the long-standing matter.
Over in PETALING JAYA, MIC Youth has welcomed the long-overdue return of the bibles.
"Since the seizure some 10 months ago, the 'Bible saga has been rolling through the political system," said MIC youth leader C. Sivaraajh.
"It is good that Azmin Ali has found a solution where Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim could not," he said in a statement.
The bibles were handed over at Istana Alam Shah here Friday morning, witnessed by Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and Azmin.
Also present were Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) officials and leaders and representatives from the Christian community.
The handing over signals an end to the controversy that began in January this year when the Jais raided the BSM's premises in Damansara and seized the bibles, saying it contravened a 1988 state enactment which prevents non-Muslims from using the word "Allah".
