Dr. Sheikh Mahmood, a member of the Ahmadiyya community and a gastroenterologist, was shot and killed in Sargodha on Thursday. He is the third Ahmadi to be targeted and killed in Pakistan over the past month.
Dr. Mahmood had earlier left his job following pressure from groups opposing the Ahmadiyya faith. Despite threats to his life, he continued to treat patients and engage in community service.
He was 58 years old and is survived by his mother, wife, two daughters, and two sons.
The incident occurred in an area where members of the Ahmadiyya community have previously faced threats and attacks. Human rights groups and members of the community have called for an investigation and for state protection of religious minorities.
