Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has pledged to anchor Singapore’s future on fairness, unveiling plans to broaden meritocracy and narrow inequality gaps. He acknowledged that income inequality remains a concern despite long-term progress and announced measures such as expanded early childhood programmes, stronger retirement adequacy, and skills-based hiring. These steps, he said, will ensure opportunities are not defined by grades alone but by diverse talents and contributions.
Wong also stressed the need to uplift undervalued professions and urged employers to recognise skills beyond paper qualifications. He reassured youth they will not be left behind and warned against divisive politics, reminding Parliament that Singapore’s survival depends on unity and solidarity.
National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat made clear that the Voluntary Early Redevelopment Scheme (VERS) is not meant to be a “lottery ticket” for homeowners. He explained in Parliament that the scheme’s purpose is to manage the renewal of ageing estates in an orderly way, not to create windfalls. Unlike the more selective and compulsory SERS, VERS is voluntary, applying to flats around 70 years old, with residents voting on whether to proceed.

Chee stressed that fairness must guide the scheme, balancing the interests of current owners with those of future generations. Observers have urged that compensation reflect varied household needs, while Chee’s broader focus remains on keeping HDB flats affordable and ensuring a steady supply of new homes.
