A DRUG trafficker, who claimed that he had been 'used by a sophisticated and complex drug-smuggling syndicate', got little sympathy in the High Court on Tuesday.
Justice Lee Sieu Kin called Khairul Anwar Zaini 'an agent of destruction' before sentencing him to 25 years in jail and 20 strokes of the cane.

TWO recent court hearings revealed the enormous profits a drug syndicate could reap.
In this case, the syndicate ringleaders stood to collect a 200 per cent profit - amounting to $582,000.
</td></tr> </tbody></table> The 42-year-old initially faced a capital charge as the amount of heroin found in the 2.5 kg consignment of drug-laced powder he received was 16.53g - more than the 15g of heroin that makes a death sentence mandatory on conviction. However, the amount was reduced to 14.99g by the prosecution. He also pleaded guilty to a second charge of trafficking in 6.43g of heroin that was found in another shipment. Four other charges for trafficking in drugs such as Ice and Subutex were considered by the judge during sentencing. Khairul Anwar admitted to packing the drugs for sale. He was paid $4,400 for each kg of heroin-laced powder he handled for the syndicate.
The High Court heard that businessman Abdul Salam Musthafa ordered the heroin and handed $30,500 to Maryati Sipon, 27, on Dec 31, 2007. She crossed over to Johor Baru the same day to hand the money to the Malaysian supplier, known only as Boy Cino. Boy Cino then got Jamaliah Yacab, 24, to carry the heroin hidden in household items and groceries into Singapore. Central Narcotics Bureau officers trailed Jamaliah from the Woodlands Checkpoint to the 10th floor lift landing of Block 19 Telok Blangah Crescent, where she passed the heroin to Khairul Anwar. Both were then arrested. Khairul Anwar has previous convictions for drug consumption and theft. Asking for the
minimum sentence of 20 years, his lawyer Mohamed Muzammil Mohamed said Khairul Anwar stayed clean after his release from prison in 2002 for drug consumption. Justice Lee noted that Khairul Anwar had succumbed to the temptation of making easy money and had become an agent of destruction.
