SINGAPORE: One Singaporean in Fukushima has not only decided to stay on but he has also helped fellow Singaporeans.

Channel NewsAsia earlier reported that 20 Singaporeans were in Sendai, located some 90 kilometres from the troubled Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Singapore's Foreign Affairs Ministry (MFA) has advised Singaporeans living within a 100-kilometre radius from the plant to leave for safer locations.

Singaporean Terence Neo said the Singapore embassy contacted him and provided him with a list of Singaporeans who were in Sendai.

He contacted them and arranged for a bus to ferry them to Narita Airport in Tokyo.

Mr Neo spoke about his experience over the phone. "They were very relieved when they see our bus. They have a lot on their minds, leaving behind their work. It was a sigh of relief, they were doing their best to find us. They are already in Singapore. I received one email from them, a thank-you email. "

Mr Neo and his Japanese wife plan to stay on, even though the MFA has urged those currently in Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures to evacuate immediately.

Mr Neo, who works for a Japanese car parts company, said their home is about 60 kilometres away from the troubled nuclear plant, which is still considered safe.

He said: "Our thinking is that there is still family and friends to live for. It's very emotional to leave just like that. We would leave, but only if the Japanese government tells us to evacuate.

"After the earthquake there is still a lot to be done. Many things still need to be done. A lot of things have been destroyed. We still need to clean up."

Mr Neo said the disaster has been a learning experience.

"You must understand that Japanese people. They don't panic. They queue for food. It's not as chaotic as everyone expect. Japan has been through the world war and nuclear bombing. You will find that panic is useless over here. People are calling to volunteer themselves for anything. For me I still have a lot to learn from them."
