<!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->According to Howard Shaw's lawyers, the Singapore courts have "extremely wide sentencing discretion" and he may just end up with a fine [Link]. This shocking revelation is on the backdrop of the recent public outcry over the sentencing of Woffles Wu, a famous plastic surgeon, who was fined $1000 instead of a six months jail term which salesman, Charlie Lim Chau Lee, got for a similar traffic offense. PAP Law Minister K Shanmugam has since given his support to the court's decision saying that Woffle Wu's $1000 fine is "within the norm of usual sentences"[Link].

The ex-principal of Pei Chun Primary School, Lee Lip Hong, was sentenced to 9 weeks jail and was released after 6 weeks due to good behavior [Link] . In another case of the similar offense for having sex with a minor, an odd job laborer, Tan Wah Eng, was jailed 4 months [Link].

It is not known whether Howard Shaw's lawyers' timely media release is a hint of what's to come. Will the grandson of the Shaw Organization be let off with just a fine?

Do you think rich people are less guilty and hence deserve lighter sentences as compared to the average Singaporean?

[TD="class: alt1"]<!-- icon and title -->Evangeline Tay Su Ann Fined $2k for Bribing Fall Guy

<!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->SINGAPORE - A model has been fined $2,000 for hiring someone to take the rap for a traffic offence she committed.

Evangeline Tay Su Ann, 22 years old, bribed a property agent to take the blame after she beat a red light on Jan 22, 2008. She paid the property agent $1,000.

Judge Jill Tan said that it was unnecessary to jail her as she was suffering from depression at the time of the offence. The judge also said that Evangeline Tay Su Ann had a low-risk of re-offending and had a clean record since 2008.

She could have been jailed up to seven years, fined or both.

Her two accomplices were jailed in the last two years. The policeman who helped her, former Deputy Superintendent of Police, 40-year-old Kelvin Choo Yew Beng, was sentenced to six months in jail in August 2010.

The property agent, 35-year-old Leung Man Kwan, was jailed three months in 2009.

Evangeline Tay Su Ann is currently undergoing treatment for her condition. Her psychiatrist said that her condition has improved. Her lawyer, Lim Kia Tong, said that she will be appealing against her sentence.

Evangeline Tay Su Ann had driven her house-mate's car without his consent. She did not possess a valid driving licence at that time. She beat a red light as she was driving at the junction of Lornie Road and Sime Road.

As a result, her house-mate, a Bulgarian business manager, received a summons from the Traffic Police in Feb 2008.

Evangeline Tay Su Ann then approached Choo for help. He roped in Leung to take the rap, after which Evangeline Tay Su Ann paid her $1,000.

She is currently a business student at the Singapore Institute of Management.

The cunt is always mightier than a cock in Singapore society!

Makes me lose confidence in the local legal system!

It means Harpreet Singh, despite his SC credentials, is going to ask his client to plead guilty.

Re: According to Howard Shaw's lawyers, the Singapore courts have "extremely wide sen

From Graham Nash "Wild Tales album" "The Prison Song":

One day a friend took me aside
And said I have to leave you
For buying something from a friend
They say I've done wrong
For protecting the name of a man
They say I'll have to leave you,
So now I'm bidding you farewell
For much too long.
And here's a song to sing,
For every man inside,
If he can hear you sing
It's an open door.
There's not a rich man there,
Who couldn't pay his way
And buy the freedom that's a high price
For the poor.
