SINGAPORE: After eight gruelling weeks of challenges and eliminations, 22-year-old Vimala Ganavelu was crowned Miss Vasantham 2011 at the show's grand final on Sunday.

Organised by MediaCorp's Vasantham channel, the pageant recognises Tamil-speaking women of Indian origin who are articulate and encompass poise and elegance.

The pageant is back for the third time after a five-year hiatus.

Vimala, a biomedical science student from Ngee Ann Poly, hopes to do research with government research agency A*STAR.

President S R Nathan was the pageant's guest-of-honour.
