Be happy, because it helps to protect you from mental illness

SINGAPORE - Be happy, that is the key to good mental health, according to the Health Promotion Board (HPB),And it wants to encourage people to stay happy to boost their mental well-being.

To mark this year's World Mental Health Day, festivities were held over the weekend at shopping malls such as Marina Square and Orchard Central.

By showcasing activities like bag designing, shooting hoops and sketching, the HPB hopes to spread the message that everyone, from the young to the old, should make an effort to be happy.
HPB deputy director (mental health education) Sng Yan Ling said: "At every point in our life, we could all do with a dose of optimism and positive thinking."

Referring to a 2004 survey, which showed that one in six Singaporean adults will develop some form of mental illness, Ms Sng acknowledged that the finding indicates a "problem that has to be dealt with". She said: "But it could also mean that people are more aware now."

According to a recent study by HPB, respondents said their mental well-being was influenced by their family and friends. Some also highlighted the influence of spirituality in their handling of life's challenges.

Through this year's Be Positive campaign, HPB also wants to reduce the stigma faced by patients and give Singaporeans a better understanding of mental health.
