98 arrested in drug bust, including 7 youths suspected of cannabis abuse

SINGAPORE: A total of 98 suspects were arrested in a four-day island-wide operation, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said in a statement on Friday (Aug 22). Nine of those arrested were suspected drug traffickers, while 89 were suspected drug abusers.
CNB said in the statement that about 72g of heroin, 19g of ‘Ice’, 56g of cannabis and five ‘Ecstasy’ tablets were seized from the operation.
In one of the operations on Aug 19, CNB arrested seven youths aged between 19 and 26, who were believed to have abused cannabis. Two of them are also being investigated for drug trafficking.
The first suspect, a 20-year-old male, was arrested in the Joo Seng Road area for suspected abuse and trafficking of cannabis. Following investigations from this arrest, CNB officers arrested another 20-year-old male suspected trafficker at his residence in Pasir Ris. Among the items seized from his bedroom are a packet believed to be stained with cannabis, a weighing scale and numerous empty plastic packets.
CNB then arrested the five other suspected cannabis abusers on Aug 19 and 20, at Bedok South, Hougang Street 61 and Woodlands. The suspects were a 19-year-old female, a 21-year-old male, a 24-year-old female, a 26-year-old male and a 19-year-old male. All seven youths arrested are Singaporeans.
In its statement, CNB said cannabis is a Class A controlled drug listed in the Misuse of Drugs Act. Consumption. "Possession or trafficking of cannabis is an offence and CNB will adopt a zero tolerance stance in enforcing these offences," it added. - CNA/by
