A nine-year-old girl from Russia was raped by two suspected Indian tourists in a Goa beach on Tuesday, reports said. The girl was allegedly raped at Arambol beach in north Goa.

The girl was with her mother but she was raped when here mother was not around on Tuesday evening, TV reports said.

The assault of the nine-year-old followed a huge outcry over the recent incident of rape a Russian woman by a Goa politician.

"It is a rape," said Vikram Verma, counsel of Russian Consulate on the matter. Reports said the rape was confirmed, according to Times Now.

Goa police suspected that the crime an act by Indian tourists and a manhunt was launched to nab them, police reportedly said.

Earlier, Goa politician John Fernandes was accused of raping a Russian woman on Dec 1, 2009.

A peeved Russian envoy to India had criticized the Indian authorities for their "insensitive" stance on the rape of the Russian girl in Goa and demanded punishment of the guilty.

"Should our people not work at night there (Goa)?" he asked reacting to the comments by Goa politicians that the girl had faulted by going out late in the night with a "stranger," Ambassador of Russia to India Alexander Kadakin had said.

Goa, a tourist magnet, is tainted by incidents of rape and killing of tourists in the recent years.

UGLY FACE OF GOA

The latest incident follows the rape of a 25-year-old Russian girl in December 2009 allegedly by local politician John Fernandes.

In another incident on December 26, two Russian girls had to hide in a forest for almost four hours after a taxi driver allegedly tried to rape them.

The Russian government, through its consulate in Mumbai, had on several occasions expressed concern about such cases involving its citizens vacationing in Goa. Russian authorities had warned its citizens against venturing out of hotels after midnight. Goa receives 40,000 Russian tourists every year.

Goa: Main accused in Russian girl rape case held

BREAKTHROUGH: Sketches of the suspects were released by the Goa police on Thursday evening.

New Delhi: The Goa government has just about saved its face. Under fire after a 9-year-old Russian girl was raped, the arrest of the main accused Aman Bhardwaj which was made in Chembur in Mumbai on Friday, has come as some relief.
Meanwhile, his accomplice Anil Raguvanshi, who was caught earlier in the day has been sent to 7 days in judicial custody. Raguvanshi was arrested from a bus stand near Pernem in Goa.
The two are employees of a Goa based pharma company.
The arrests have come after sketches of the suspects were released by the Goa police on Thursday evening.
Aman allegedly raped the 9-year-old victim as she was taking a swim in the sea on January 26. All through Friday, pressure continued to mount on the Goa government to act fast.
Union Information and Broadcasting (I B) Minister Ambika Soni said, It's unfortunate...I strongly condemn such incidents.. there should be a task force for tourism in the country which need to deal with such incidents.”
Meanwhile, amidst growing criticism, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat was yet again on the defensive.
“Whenever any such incident has taken place government machinery has swung into action and immediately tried to nab the culprit. Goa is still a safe place for tourists. Even in this case I am personally monitoring the case,” said Digambar Kamat.
Despite the assurances, the truth remains that attacks on tourists is on the rise in India's tourist paradise and no amount of punishment for the accused will truly wipe away the trauma suffered by the child.
