The Customs & Excise Department has arrested nine people and seized 49 karaoke systems loaded with suspected infringing songs and movies worth $600,000.

The department received tips alleging bars were using karaoke systems loaded with infringing songs.

Customs officers raided a technology company in Sham Shui Po on December 10, and seized 41 karaoke systems, which contained 20,000 to 30,000 suspected infringing songs and some movies.

They arrested a 54-year-old man who was the proprietor, and a 35-year-old woman who worked there.

Officers also searched five pubs in San Po Kong, Sham Shui Po, Cheung Sha Wan, To Kwa Wan and Tsim Sha Tsui. They were found using karaoke systems loaded with suspected infringing songs and movies and were believed to be clients of the technology company.

Officers also arrested five men and two women, aged 18 to 45, who were pub proprietors or waiters, and seized eight karaoke systems worth $12,000 each.

People can report counterfeiting activities at 2545 6182.
