Prominent Chinese artist Fan Zeng has been “taken away” by his new wife and most of his valuable possessions have also “gone missing”, his daughter has alleged.

“Rumours have circulated online recently claiming my father, Fan Zeng, was forcibly removed from his home and has since gone missing,” Fan Xiaohui said in a social media post on Saturday.

“As his daughter, I want to first thank everyone for their concern, but I am deeply anxious about his health and safety.”

Fan Zeng, 87, announced his marriage to Xu Meng, who is reportedly 50 years his junior, last year. He has been married a few times, and his previous wife died several years ago.

Xu is 37 and a TV presenter for state media, according to Chinese media reports.

Fan’s daughter said she lost track of him after they last met in early July. She had been overseas since but was shocked to find his Beijing house sealed and empty upon her recent return, according to her post.

Citing the household help, she also alleged that Fan’s lifetime collection of paintings, calligraphy and antiques had disappeared.

Fan Zeng is among China’s most influential calligraphers and painters. Over the past decade, his works have fetched more than 2.3 billion Chinese yuan (US$315 million) at public auctions, according to the Hurun Art List, an annual ranking of the top-selling living Chinese artists.

Born in 1938 in eastern Jiangsu province, Fan gained international recognition by showcasing his work in countries including Japan, Britain, France and Italy.

He has also contributed to strengthening cultural exchanges between China and the West. In 2010, then French president Nicolas Sarkozy awarded him the Knight of the Legion of Honour for his contributions to China-France cultural relations.

The drama surrounding Fan’s disappearance has topped Chinese social media search lists, with his daughter’s posts widely shared across platforms.

According to her, Fan said he needed to stay in hospital to take care of Xu, who had fallen ill, though it is not clear when this exchange took place.

She was told by the help that Xu took her father away on July 13, along with all of his daily necessities, and it seemed unlikely that he would return, the post read.

“For many days I have tried to call him, but his phone has always been switched off. I immediately reached out to Xu Meng via WeChat – the only channel of contact – but she has still not told me where my father is,” Fan said.

According to her, long-time staff who had served Fan Zeng for over a decade said they were dismissed with large payouts and only newly hired domestic helpers, brought in by Xu, accompanied the couple when they left.

However, some web users have questioned why – if Fan Zeng has indeed disappeared – his daughter chose to go public on social media rather than report it to the police.

State-backed magazine China Newsweek reported on Sunday that Beijing police had yet to receive any call for help from Fan Zeng’s family.

The South China Morning Post reached out to the art company owned by Fan Zeng, which is still in operation. Sales staff said they had no information regarding the elderly artist’s whereabouts or whether the allegations made by his daughter were true.

ATB wife probably brought him to a secluded place so he can focus on his job and earn. Much much more. And for that, artist will be rewarded in kind.
