81,500 packets of contraband cigarettes seized

SINGAPORE: Singapore Customs has raked in its largest haul of illegal cigarettes within Singapore in the past year.
The agency seized some 81,500 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes during night raids at three locations on March 12.
The cigarettes have a street value of over S$800,000 and the total duty and Goods and Services Tax involved exceeded S$710,000.
Two men were also arrested during the raids.
If convicted, they can be fined up to 40 times the amount of duty evaded, or jailed up to six years.
