A GROUP of seven was rescued by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) from a flat in Clementi this morning. They were believed to be threatened by a man wielding a parang, according to news reports.

The reports said that the man had been jobless for a long time and is apparently facing financial difficulties.

AsiaOne understands that the man was on a rampage in the flat and the group of seven, which included his family and tenants, hid in the bedrooms to escape.

The SCDF were alerted to the incident at 8.02am on Monday, according to a statement.

Two fire-engines, two fire bikes, one Red Rhino, one ambulance and two support vehicles were immediately dispatched to the location, Block 706 Clementi West Street 2.

Upon arrival, a lifepack and rescue nets were set up.

SCDF then proceeded to rescue the seven people from three different bedrooms of the unit.

Among them was a boy aged about three years old, he is said to the child of the parang-wielder.

He was brought to safety by a Disaster Assistance & Rescue Team (DART) rescuer who rappelled down with him.

Ladders were pitched at the front and rear bedrooms and the others were able to descend to safety.
Two Bangladeshis and an Iranian were among the tenents who were rescued.

No one was injured in the incident, said the SCDF.
