A WOMAN'S call to the police, to report a man walking around naked in the flat opposite hers, led to the uncovering of a string of sexual assaults on a 12-year-old boy. The man, a 68-year-old freelance magician, who was teaching the boy magic, had talked the secondary school student into engaging in sex acts with him. On Tuesday, the man was jailed six years for the offences in July and August last year. The man, who is divorced with children, had pleaded guilty in May to four counts of sexual assault. Another 11 charges were taken into consideration. The penalty for sexual assault is up to 20 years' jail and a fine or caning. Men above the age of 50 cannot be caned.

Court ups magician's jail term

<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A MAGICIAN, who sexually assaulted his 12-year-old apprentice, had his jail term increased from six years to 10 years after the prosecution convinced the Court of Appeal that the man had abused his position of authority to violate a young vulnerable boy. Although there was no evidence of sexual grooming, Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong, noted that the 69-year-old offender had cultivated the relationship with the victim nearly a year.

And it was only by accident that the offences were discovered when a neighbour saw the man walking nude in his flat and called the police. The man told the cops he was alone but a search found the boy in a bedroom. Last November, the High Court sentenced the magician to three years' jail for each of the four offences he pleaded guilty to. The judge took into consideration 11 other offences when deciding on the jail term.

Two of the jail terms were ordered to overlap, making a total of six years.

The prosecution appealed and on Monday, CJ Chan and appeal judges Andrew Phang and Boon Leong and V.K. Rajah increased this to five years per charge. Dressed in the orange prison overalls, the man looked shaken with their decision. He cannot be named to protect tie identity of the victim. The penalty for sexual assault is up to 20 years' jail and a fine or caning but men above the age of 50 are spared the cane.
