Getai stage becomes more colourful with international acts
The getai stage seems to be becoming more international, says STOMPer Beethoven, who noticed more varieties of songs and singers from different countries performing on stage.
Perhaps this is a continuing trend as these foreign singers change their performance styles to suit Singaporean tastes and culture.
In an email, Beethoven says:
“These pictures were taken at the getai show at Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre at West Coast Highway.
"An estimated crowd of 3,000 came to watch the various singers belting out their favourite songs.
“The famous actor Chen Jian Bing was on stage to enthuse the crowd with his repertoire of Mandarin songs including a Hokkien version of Michael Jackson's famous ‘Beat It’ which in 1982, won two Grammy Awards. The crowd gave him the loudest applause.
“One Malaysian singer sang the famous Thai song titled ‘LOY KRATHONG’ and the Thai foreign workers roared their approval and displayed their thunderous applause.
“The famous Taiwanese singer Ya Ya appeared on a long gown in a sombre mood. She told the crowd that last week at a getai performance when she peeled off her costumes piece by piece, the police were enraged and subsequently solemnly advised her boss to tell all getai singers not to perform any striptease show as young children are usually present.
“She said that all she could show was her revealing cleavage and she would abide by our laws so as not to corrupt public morals or outrage public decency. The crowd roared their disappointment.
“Perhaps by next year the getai organisers would be bringing in more singers from Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.”
